Velux Window Automation Project Update and Tips

Hello everyone,

I wanted to share an update on my recent project to automate my Velux windows using HomeMatic wired rollershutter actors. It’s been quite the learning experience, and I thought I’d walk through my journey in case it helps anyone else tackling a similar project.

Project Background
I’ve been using FS20-based window automation for years, but I’ve always wanted to integrate everything into my HomeMatic system for better consistency and control. My Velux windows are powered by 24V motors, which posed a bit of a challenge since the HM-Rolladenaktor is designed for 230V motors. I knew I’d need some relay magic to make this work, but it was a great opportunity to dive deeper into my system’s capabilities.

Challenges and Solutions
Initially, I considered using a single 24V power supply, but I realized that with three windows to automate, power management would be crucial. I decided to go with a larger 24V, 3A power supply to ensure all motors had enough juice. This approach simplified wiring and eliminated the need for multiple smaller supplies.

One unexpected hurdle was the inrush current of the Meanwell power supply. I learned that it can draw up to 70A on startup, which is quite hefty. To mitigate this, I ended up using a solid-state relay rated for high inrush currents. This was a bit of a scramble, but it paid off in the end.

Lessons Learned

  • Power Management: Size your power supply correctly. I underestimated the startup current initially, but correcting that made the system much more reliable.
  • Relay Selection: Solid-state relays might not be the best for high inrush applications. Stick with mechanical relays if possible, especially if you’re dealing with motors.
  • ** Wiring and Safety**: Always double-check your wiring, especially when dealing with different voltage levels. Safety first!

Final Thoughts
After weeks of planning and tweaking, the system is now up and running smoothly. The integration with HomeMatic has been seamless, and I love having all my window controls in one place. It’s been a rewarding project, and I’m already brainstorming the next automation to tackle!

If anyone has questions or tips on similar projects, feel free to reach out. I’d love to hear how others have approached automating their windows!
