VeraPlus Controller Experience: Lessons Learned

After spending several weeks with the VeraPlus controller, I wanted to share my experiences and insights. While I was initially excited about the potential improvements over my previous setup, my journey with VeraPlus has been anything but smooth.

The first major issue I encountered was with the system alerts on the dashboard. These alerts would appear and disappear seemingly at random, leaving me constantly concerned about device malfunctions. Even after clearing them through the settings, they would reappear, creating unnecessary stress.

Another significant problem was the energy monitoring feature. Despite having a compatible energy monitor, the energy card on the dashboard remained blank. Repeated attempts to troubleshoot, including reinstalling the app and resetting the device, yielded no results. This was particularly frustrating since energy monitoring was a key reason for upgrading my system.

The weather display also proved to be unreliable. Instead of showing accurate local conditions, it would often default to a warmer climate, requiring frequent manual updates and restarts. This inconsistency made it difficult to trust the device for real-time information.

Device compatibility was another hurdle. Many devices, especially Zigbee and Z-Wave ones, either didn’t function correctly or displayed incorrect information. For instance, a motion sensor that should also report temperature failed to do so, and a fan switch was misclassified as a light switch. These issues added unnecessary complexity to my setup.

The app integration was equally problematic. Apps would crash or delete themselves, cluttering the interface and complicating the user experience. Bluetooth functionality was also underwhelming, with devices failing to connect reliably.

In contrast, my previous setup with SmartThings has been far more reliable. It offers better compatibility, a more user-friendly interface, and a robust community for troubleshooting. After encountering these issues with VeraPlus, I’ve decided to stick with SmartThings for now.

My advice to anyone considering VeraPlus is to thoroughly research its compatibility with your existing devices and be prepared for a potential learning curve. Stability and reliability are crucial in a home automation system, and for me, VeraPlus hasn’t delivered on those fronts.

Overall, while VeraPlus has some promising features, the consistent issues I’ve faced have made it a challenging choice. I’ll continue to monitor its updates but, for now, I’m glad I kept my SmartThings setup as a backup.
