Voice Alerts for Water Leaks: A Smarter Solution

Hey everyone, I wanted to share my recent experience with water leak detection and how I found a smarter way to handle alerts. As many of you know, water leaks can be a nightmare, especially in the middle of the night. I recently had an issue with my water softener, and while my Samsung water leak sensor and Dome shutoff valve worked perfectly, I was woken up by a text message after the leak had already been going on for hours.

I had a GoControl Z-Wave siren, but I was hesitant to use it because it’s pretty loud and would scare my dogs. That’s when I started thinking—why not have a voice alert instead? I did some research and found that it’s possible to set up voice announcements on Google Home devices when certain events occur. For example, my Next detector does something similar, and it’s much less jarring than a siren.

I decided to give it a try. I set up an automation where, if the water leak sensor detects a leak, my Google Home and Home Mini devices announce the alert in a calm, clear voice. It’s been working perfectly, and I no longer have to worry about being woken up by a loud siren or missing the alert altogether. Plus, my dogs are much happier!

If anyone else is looking for a similar solution, I’d recommend exploring voice alerts through Google Home or other smart speakers. It’s a small tweak that makes a big difference in how we handle emergencies in our homes. Let me know if you have any questions or if you’ve tried something similar!

Best,
Tom
