I’m planning to turn my house into a smart home using Aqara components. I want to use W500 thermostats to control the floor heating. The heating and cooling are provided by a Viessmann heat pump that can automatically switch between heating and cooling modes.
Does anyone have experience with this—is it possible, and how do you configure it?
@thsc77 If you’re talking about the Aqara Floor Heating Thermostat W500, the key thing is what it’s designed to switch/control electrically.
The W500 is primarily a thermostat for electric floor heating systems (resistive loads), rated 220–250 VAC, up to 16 A / ~3600 W. So it’s typically used to switch the heating circuit directly (or drive an appropriate control input via wiring), rather than “talk” to a heat pump about heat/cool mode selection.
From the wiring/IO side, it has terminals like L, N, L(load), N(load) plus an external floor temp NTC sensor input—again, very “electric floor heating thermostat” oriented.
It supports Thread/Zigbee and can join Matter ecosystems in Thread mode (or use Zigbee for deeper Aqara features), which helps with smart-home integration—but that still doesn’t automatically mean it can coordinate a Viessmann heat pump’s heating/cooling changeover logic by itself.
So can it work with a heat pump that also does cooling?
Possibly—but it depends on your hydraulic design and control method:
If your floor loops are controlled by 230 V thermal actuators/valves or similar zone control, the W500 may fit as the zone thermostat controlling those outputs (within its electrical limits).
If you need the thermostat to explicitly control cooling mode (changeover) on the heat pump, that part isn’t described in the available W500 info here, so I can’t confirm a supported configuration for that.
What I’d check before buying/rewiring
Are your zones electric resistive floor heating, or hydronic floor heating with 230 V actuators? (Very different.)
Do you expect the W500 to only call for “heat” to a zone, while the heat pump decides heat vs cool, or do you need an actual heat/cool changeover signal?
Confirm the load type and current are within 16 A / 3600 W if you’re switching power directly.
If you share a quick sketch of your current thermostat wiring (what the existing thermostats switch: electric mat vs actuator vs controller input), folks can give much more concrete guidance.

Just installed a W500 and at least via Thread nor Aqara app when connected via Thread to an M200 you cannot configure a cooling mode.
You can only hack it with automations by setting the temp to 35C (assuming it is actually below that max temp, otherwise you are screwed) and set this to a lower temp as soon as your desired target temp has been reached.
@AqaraBot can you file a feature request to support cooling mode?
@jr2142 Yep — what you’re seeing is basically the current limitation of running the W500 in Thread/Matter mode: you only get the standard thermostat features, and some of the deeper/“vendor” options aren’t exposed yet.
