Water Leak Detection and Automatic Shutoff Solution

Hi everyone, I wanted to share my experience with setting up a water leak detection and automatic shutoff system. After doing some research, I found a solution that works well with SmartThings and is relatively affordable. Here’s how I did it:

First, I purchased four SmartThings Water Leak Sensors. These sensors are great for detecting water leaks and sending alerts to my phone. I placed them in key areas of my home where water damage could occur, such as near the washing machine and under the kitchen sink.

Next, I needed a way to automatically shut off the water supply when a leak is detected. I came across a Zigbee Water Valve Actuator from AliExpress. It was important to ensure that this valve was compatible with my SmartThings hub, so I did some research and found a reliable seller. After setting it up, I modified the handler in the SmartThings app to recognize it as a Zigbee Valve.

Now, the system works seamlessly. If a leak is detected, the SmartThings app triggers the valve to shut off the water supply. This has given me peace of mind, especially when I’m away from home. The best part is that everything is processed locally, so it works even without an internet connection.

I hope this helps anyone looking to implement a similar system. If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to reach out!

Cheers,
Jerzy
