Weekend Project Ideas: Smart Clothes Dryer Automation

Weekend projects are a great way to dive into smart home automation, and I’ve got a fantastic one to share that combines creativity with practicality. This weekend, I decided to tackle the age-old problem of knowing when my clothes are dry without constantly checking the dryer. Here’s how I turned it into a seamless smart home integration!

The Challenge

I’ve seen several folks attempting, with success, to integrate their clothes dryer into Home Assistant. However, most of these require high-voltage plugs, rewiring their dryer, and/or passive electricity monitoring. While these methods work, they can be complex and potentially dangerous for those not familiar with electrical systems. I wanted a simpler solution that didn’t involve opening up my dryer or dealing with high-voltage wiring.

The Solution: SmartDry

Enter: SmartDry. I read a few reviews, and it turned out to be dead simple to set up. Just place the sensor in your dryer drum, plug in a USB “hub” nearby, and pair it to your phone. It works really well, notifying me often 10 minutes early that my clothes are dry. I then interrupt the drying cycle and have never been disappointed at the humidity of the clothes—they’re dry every time!

Integration with Home Assistant

The real magic happens when integrating this with Home Assistant. I’m currently working to reverse engineer the protocol to create a custom integration, but in the meantime, I’m using the SmartDry app to send notifications directly to my phone. It’s a great workaround and keeps me informed even when I’m not home.

Tips for Success

  1. Sensor Placement: Ensure the sensor is placed correctly in the dryer drum for accurate readings.
  2. USB Hub Placement: Keep the USB hub close to the dryer to avoid any signal issues.
  3. Pairing: Follow the app instructions carefully to ensure seamless communication between the sensor and your phone.
  4. Automation: Once integrated with Home Assistant, you can set up automations to notify you or even pause the drying cycle automatically.

Final Thoughts

This project was a breath of fresh air compared to the more invasive methods I’ve seen. It’s affordable, easy to set up, and incredibly effective. Plus, knowing exactly when my clothes are dry has saved me both time and energy. If you’re looking for a smart home project that delivers real value without breaking the bank or requiring complex wiring, I highly recommend giving SmartDry a try!

Happy automating! :rocket:
