What routers and network setups are you using or would recommend for Matter?

Hi everyone,

We’ve noticed that some Matter devices can run into onboarding issues depending on the Wi-Fi router and network setup. I’m curious to hear from the community:
•Have you experienced Matter devices failing to join the network?
•What brand and model of router are you using?
•What does your network topology look like? (e.g., mesh, APs, VLANs, etc.)
•Do you have any router models you would recommend for a more stable Matter experience?

Any insights, success stories, or lessons learned would be super helpful. Thanks in advance!

I use plus net which does not have a true ipv6 but can be set up locally on their router.

It works but no external ipv6 access

I use the supplied plus net router for internet access with a dummy wifi i don’t use. But i have a
Private wifi set up with Tp-link deco units. One deco unit act as a router and is connected via ethernet to the plusnet unit

I have another tp-link deco unit with an ethernet cable between the two Tp-link decos to act as a backhaul. That way if i am connected to the second deco via wifi it uses the back haul to connect to the other deco unit and out to the internet.

It works well for me and by placing the second unit near the rear i can access the internet from the garden which the plusnet unit could not do.

In terms of speed i have a 300 mb fiber link. Plus net wifi never got over 100 mb but using the tp-link as i type this in the garden i have 205 mb which is normal.

One other thing is with the tp-link mesh i move between the two unit seemlessly.

I have no connection with tp-link and know of other mesh systems out there but given limited budget and a good offer at the time of purchase i got these.

I’m trying to connect one of the beta switches right now and haven’t had success. I’m using eero routers. It’s a mesh network. with the Gateway as a 7 and then two 6es. House is about 1,300 sq. feet.

I struggled quite a bit to get things up and running. If I remember correctly the issue was that IPv6 was disabled on my ISP-provided router. After enabling it, connecting Thread devices via my Google Nest Hub Max worked fine

Your setup sounds well thought out, especially using Ethernet backhaul between the Deco units for stronger performance in the garden. I assume everything stays on the same local network, and it sounds like you haven’t run into any issues with mDNS being restricted.

We’ve seen cases where mDNS traffic is blocked or filtered by some routers, which can prevent Matter devices from being discovered during setup — or even cause them to go offline frequently after onboarding. So it’s great that your Deco system seems to handle that smoothly, which is ideal for Matter.

IPv6 being disabled on the router is an easy one to overlook, but definitely a common culprit. We’ve also seen cases where disabling IPv6 or improper multicast support can prevent Thread or Matter devices from being discovered or onboarded properly.

You might want to check whether IPv6 and mDNS are enabled in your eero settings. We’ve found that on mesh networks like eero, mDNS-related issues are more likely to cause problems with device discovery during Matter onboarding. Also, make sure ”Client Isolation“ is turned off.

Super helpful. I’m out of town at the moment but will check when I’m back.

never had an issue with Matter devices

I’ve got IPv6 turned on. I can’t turn on mDNS as it’s greyed out. I don’t see an option for client isolation but client steering is turned on.
