When the Kids “Just Slam the Door”

It’s something that happens in almost every home. The door gets slammed shut — but not quite all the way. It ends up slightly ajar, and nobody notices.

To solve this, I installed an Aqara Multi-State Sensor P100 on our main entrance door and created a simple automation in the Aqara app. If the door stays open for more than three minutes, we receive a notification.

The Aqara app offers several ways to handle alerts. You can receive a push notification directly on your phone, or even play a custom audio message through an Aqara hub to announce that the door is still open. It’s a simple setup, but it makes a big difference in everyday life.

I also added a sensor to the shed door. When the door opens, the light automatically turns on. When it closes, the light turns off again.

Since the kids are constantly going in and out to grab bikes, tools, and other things, I’m planning to add another automation here as well — a reminder if the shed door remains open for more than five minutes.

So far, the sensors have been very stable and reliable. I currently running them in Zigbee mode without any issues.

I’m also looking forward to a white version of the Aqara Multi-State Sensor P100 for my windows. Most homes have white window frames, so a white sensor would blend in much better visually.

It’s a really practical use and great for home security! The white one will be available once it officially launches.

Great use case! We’ve all dealt with that ‘slightly ajar’ door at some point.
