Window sensor for letter box

I have the idea, to use a window sensor on my letter/parcel box to indicate an incoming letter/parcel with a notification. Do you have experience with this kind of automation?

Hi @SuperUke ! That automation can work - depends on the kind of letter box of course! But check out the new P100 multi state sensor! This new sensor is definitely the better choice- it will be released soon

I’ve been using the Aqara Door and Window Sensor T1 on my letterbox for quite a while, works well. One tip, put a delay as the end action to prevent multiple triggers if the postman fumbles whilst squeezing large or multiple items through the slot.

Do you have a metal letterbox? Because I think the metal with affect how the magnetic part of the door sensor works. When I put one on my door, I put it above the metal core and it didn’t detect closing properly  Or maybe I got a faulty one or did something wrong

It’s stainless steel which isn’t magnetic.

:man_facepalming: Right, I forgot that mailboxes are stainless steel

I have been using this as well. It works perfectly fine until some postman tries to push in a package that barely fits. That always dislocates the sensor. Since our postmen do this regularly I gave up on replacing it. Maybe I’ll switch to another device.

Yes, I have a friend who does this and wrote a routine in HA so that when the letterbox opened, Alexa announced “You’ve got mail.” lol Drove his wife nuts!

Mine uses an MP3 of the original AOL “You’ve got mail” announcement! I was thinking of changing it to the Joanna Lumley British version “You’ve got post”.
