Wyze Automated Irrigation System: A DIY Solution for Smart Gardening

Hey everyone, I wanted to share an exciting DIY project I’ve been working on to automate my vegetable and herb garden. It’s been a fun challenge, and I thought I’d walk through my process in case anyone else is interested in trying something similar!

The Problem

I’ve always wanted to grow my own veggies, but I’ve struggled with remembering to water them consistently. Especially with the unpredictable weather we’ve been having, I knew I needed a more reliable solution. Plus, using rainwater for irrigation has always been something I’ve wanted to try for its nutritional benefits.

The Solution

I decided to create an automated irrigation system using Wyze devices and some basic hardware. Here’s how it came together:

  1. Materials Needed

    • Wyze door sensor
    • Wyze plug
    • Water pump (<$10)
    • Irrigation hose (<$10)
    • PVC pipe (<$5)
    • Float made from a noodle
    • Reservoir bucket
    • 5-gallon planting buckets
    • WyzeCam for monitoring
  2. Setup

    • I attached the PVC pipe to the reservoir bucket and ran the irrigation hose to each planting bucket.
    • The water pump was connected to the Wyze plug, allowing me to control it remotely.
    • A simple float made from a noodle was placed in the reservoir to monitor water levels.
    • The Wyze door sensor was attached to the float to detect when the reservoir needed refilling.
  3. Automation

    • When the float (attached to the door sensor) detects that the water level is low, it triggers the Wyze plug to activate the pump for a specific amount of time.
    • The WyzeCam was set up to capture timelapse videos of the plants, which has been a fun way to watch them grow!

Benefits

This system has been a game-changer for me. Not only does it ensure my plants get the water they need without constant monitoring, but it also uses rainwater, which is better for the plants. Plus, the automation aspect has been a great learning experience!

Looking for Feedback

I’d love to hear if anyone else has tried something similar or has tips to improve this setup. Maybe you have a different method for automated irrigation or suggestions for optimizing water usage. Let’s share ideas and make this even better!
