Wyze Cam Installation and Usage Tips

I recently installed a Wyze Cam in my vehicle to monitor my side windows, and I thought I’d share my experience and some tips for anyone considering doing the same.

Setup and Power Supply

First, I wanted to ensure the camera wouldn’t drain my car’s battery. I connected it to a 12V cigarette lighter adapter, which worked perfectly. The camera powers on as soon as the ignition is turned on, and shuts off when the car is turned off. I didn’t notice any issues with the camera’s performance or lifespan from this setup.

Wifi Connectivity

Since the camera won’t connect to my home Wi-Fi while in the car, I set it up to connect directly to my phone’s mobile hotspot when needed. This allows me to access the footage without relying on external networks. It’s a bit of a workaround, but it gets the job done.

Motion Detection and Alerts

One feature I really appreciate is the motion detection. It sends alerts to my phone whenever there’s movement detected, which is great for security. I’ve had a few instances where I received alerts about curious passersby, and it gives me peace of mind knowing my car is being watched even when I’m not around.

Battery Life and Reliability

I was worried about the camera’s battery life, especially since it’s only powered when the car is on. However, it seems to hold up well, and I haven’t experienced any unexpected shutdowns or malfunctions. The camera starts up quickly once the ignition is turned on, which is convenient.

Tips for Others

  • Mounting: I found that using a suction cup mount provided the best stability without damaging the car’s paint.
  • Privacy: Make sure to set the privacy settings correctly to avoid unintended footage sharing.
  • Storage: The camera’s built-in storage is sufficient for short-term use, but I recommend connecting it to a mobile hotspot for cloud backups if you plan to use it frequently.

Overall, I’m really happy with how this setup has worked out. It’s a cost-effective solution for monitoring my vehicle without investing in a full dashcam system. If you’re looking for a similar setup, I’d highly recommend giving Wyze Cam a try!
