I’ve been using Wyze cameras for a while now, and I must say, they’ve been a game-changer for my home security setup. However, one thing I’ve been trying to perfect is automating their motion and sound detection based on whether my family is home or not. Let me share my journey and experiences with you!
The Goal:
I wanted my Wyze cameras to automatically turn on motion/sound detection only when both my phone and my wife’s phone leave the house. When either of us is home, the detection should stay off to avoid unnecessary notifications. This would mean peace of mind when we’re away and less clutter in our notifications when we’re not.
The Challenge:
While I explored using the Wyze app itself, it didn’t quite offer the level of customization I was hoping for. I then looked into IFTTT, which I’ve used before for automating tasks. However, IFTTT alone couldn’t track both phones leaving the house simultaneously. This led me to research other apps that could work alongside IFTTT to achieve this functionality.
The Solution:
After some digging, I found a combination of apps that could help. One app tracks the geolocation of both phones, and another acts as a middleware to communicate with Wyze. This setup allows the cameras to switch on only when both of us are away. It’s a bit of a workaround, but it’s working perfectly for me!
The Experience:
Setting this up was a bit of a learning curve, but it’s been worth it. The cameras now notify me only when needed, which has significantly reduced the noise in my notifications. It’s also given me more confidence in my home security system.
Looking for Feedback:
Has anyone else tackled a similar automation challenge? I’d love to hear if there are more streamlined solutions or if others have tips to improve this setup. Also, if anyone has experience with other apps that could simplify this process, please share!
