Wyze Camera Lens Swap Experience and Tips

Hey everyone! I’ve been using Wyze cameras for a while now, and I must say, they’re a fantastic choice for home security. Recently, I decided to upgrade my Wyze V2 camera by replacing its lens to get a wider field of view. After some research and a bit of trial and error, I managed to pull it off successfully. Here’s my experience and some tips for anyone considering a similar upgrade!

First, I stumbled upon a YouTube video titled Wyze Camera Lens Swap, which provided a detailed guide on how to replace the lens. However, I found a slightly easier method that involved accessing a small hole above the lens. By using a small L-shaped hook, I was able to pry open the plastic ring holding the lens in place. It was a bit nerve-wracking, but taking it step by step made the process manageable.

I purchased a wide-angle lens from Amazon for around $11.49, specifically the Crazepony RunCam RC21 FPV Camera Lens. The installation wasn’t too bad once I got the hang of it. The only tricky part was unscrewing the old lens and screwing in the new one without damaging anything. Using pliers for extra grip was essential, especially since there was a small amount of glue holding the original lens in place.

After installing the new lens, I noticed a significant improvement in the camera’s field of view. The bitrate also increased, which I assume is due to the wider angle capturing more movement. I’ve included some comparison photos below to show the difference between the normal and wide-angle views.

One unexpected benefit was how much more detailed the footage became. The wider angle not only captured more of my yard but also provided clearer images during motion detection. It’s definitely worth the minor hassle of swapping the lens!

If you’re thinking about upgrading your Wyze camera’s lens, here are a few tips:

  • Be patient: Take your time to carefully pry open the plastic ring. Hurrying could lead to damage.
  • Use the right tools: A small hook and pliers are invaluable for this task.
  • Check for glue: Some lenses might be glued in place, so be prepared to apply a bit of force.
  • Test the new lens: After installation, check the focus and adjust if necessary.

Overall, I’m thrilled with the results. This simple upgrade has made my Wyze camera even more effective for home monitoring. If you have any questions or need advice, feel free to ask! Happy swapping!
