X-10: A Reliable Choice for Stability Over the Years

I’ve been using X-10 technology in my home for over two decades now, and I must say, it’s stood the test of time like no other protocol I’ve encountered. When I moved into my house back in 2001, I faced a unique challenge with its century-old knob-and-tube wiring. Installing wall switches was out of the question due to the messy and expensive rewiring it would require. That’s when I turned to X-10, which I had experience with from my previous home.

The setup was straightforward: I installed switch modules and wired them directly to the chandeliers, concealing them in the ceiling. Fast forward 17 years, these modules are still going strong without any issues. I’ve since upgraded most of my home to Zigbee and Z-Wave devices, but those X-10 switches remain untouched, a testament to their reliability.

While X-10 doesn’t offer the same level of feedback or seamless integration as modern protocols, its rock-solid stability is unmatched. I’ve switched between platforms like Wink, OpenHAB, and SmartThings over the years, and through it all, X-10 has been my dependable fallback. The Max-Controller, in particular, has been a lifesaver during cloud outages.

Now, with SmartThings, I’ve discovered new automation possibilities that take my X-10 devices to the next level. It’s incredible how a protocol from the 80s can still hold its own against today’s cutting-edge technologies. If you’re looking for something that just works without the hassle, X-10 is hard to beat. @mckenph, @JohnnyD69, what are your thoughts on X-10’s lasting appeal?
