Hey everyone! I’ve been diving into the world of smart home automation, and I’m absolutely loving the journey. I wanted to share some of my experiences and maybe pick up a few tips along the way.
First off, I’ve been using a mix of Insteon devices and Xiaomi sensors in my setup. The Insteon stuff has been pretty reliable overall, but the door sensors have been a real pain. They just disappear randomly, and I have to restart Home Assistant to get them back online. It’s super frustrating, especially when I’m trying to set up a DIY alarm system for my outdoor storage buildings. The distance from my HA server is about 150 feet through several walls, and I’m worried a USB dongle won’t cut it. I’ve heard great things about the Xiaomi Aquara open/close sensors, so I’m really curious if they’d work better in this setup. Maybe a zigbee hub inside one of the buildings could help? Any recommendations would be awesome!
On another note, I’ve been using Tado X thermostats for about two months now, and they’ve been fantastic. But lately, they’ve started disappearing from HA or losing connection. It’s so frustrating because it’s not the network—other Matter devices are working fine. I’ve tried resetting them to factory settings, but they only work for a few days before acting up again. I’m really hoping someone has a solution or knows if a firmware update could fix this. Reliability is key for me with these kinds of devices!
I’d also love to hear about anyone’s experiences with integrating ESPHome with Airthings sensors. I’m considering building a DIY BLE to Wi-Fi hub with an ESP32, but I’m not sure if it can handle multiple devices. Any advice or similar use cases would be super helpful!
Overall, I’m really enjoying the smart home ecosystem, but these hiccups are keeping me on my toes. I’m excited to see how things evolve and can’t wait to learn more from the community. Thanks for all the support and expertise out there! ![]()
