Z-Wave Device Connection Issues: A Newbie's Struggle

Hey everyone, I’m new to the world of smart home devices and I’m trying to set up my first Z-Wave switch. I came across a lot of positive reviews about Z-Wave’s reliability, so I decided to give it a shot. However, the process hasn’t been as smooth as I hoped.

I purchased a Zooz ZEN21 switch and followed the instructions to include it in my SmartThings hub. At first, everything seemed to work fine—the switch was detected, and I could control it through the app. But after a day or two, the switch started acting up. Sometimes it wouldn’t respond to commands, and other times it would disconnect entirely from the hub.

I did some research and found that many users have similar issues with Z-Wave devices. It seems like compatibility between the hub’s firmware and the device’s protocol can be a problem. My hub is running version 18.00022, which uses Z-Wave protocol version 3.83, while my Zooz switch is on version 4.05. I’m starting to think this mismatch might be the root of my troubles.

I tried a few troubleshooting steps: resetting the switch, rebooting the hub, and even excluding and re-adding the device. For a moment, everything worked perfectly, but the issue resurfaced after a short period. It’s frustrating because I was so excited to start automating my home, and now I’m stuck with a finicky switch.

I’m curious if others have experienced similar issues and if there are any workarounds or solutions. I’m also wondering when SmartThings plans to update their firmware to support the latest Z-Wave protocols. Any advice or insights would be greatly appreciated!

Fingers crossed for a fix—I really want to make the most of my new smart home setup!
