Z-Wave Security and Device Compatibility Insights

I recently encountered an interesting challenge while setting up my Z-Wave network, and I wanted to share my experience and insights with the community.

For those who might not know, I’ve been experimenting with integrating various Z-Wave devices into my smart home setup. One particular issue I faced was related to the security popup during the inclusion process of certain devices. Specifically, I was working with the Fibaro Wall Plug and noticed that the security box either didn’t appear at all, resulting in the device being added at the S0 level without any prompt, or it timed out when I tried to deselect all security options.

After some research and trial and error, I discovered that if the device supports up to S2 authentication, it shouldn’t default to S0. However, there’s a quirk where if the security box does appear and you deselect everything, it might leave you with an unknown device. Interestingly, I found a workaround: if I navigated to the Z-Wave details page and hit the discover button on the unknown device, it correctly identified itself and was added as S0. While this isn’t the most seamless process, it’s a reliable workaround for now.

This experience made me more curious about how Z-Wave security levels are handled in different devices and how manufacturers might improve the inclusion process to avoid confusion. I’d love to hear if others have encountered similar issues or have discovered other solutions or best practices for handling Z-Wave security during setup.

On a positive note, despite the initial hurdles, my Fibaro Wall Plug is now up and running smoothly, and I’m excited to continue expanding my Z-Wave ecosystem. It’s these small challenges that make the journey of building a smart home all the more rewarding! :rocket:
