Zigbee Network Backup and Recovery: A Newbie's Journey

As a newbie to the world of home automation, I’ve been diving headfirst into setting up my Zigbee network. It’s been an exciting journey, but also a bit nerve-wracking. I’ve installed quite a few Zigbee wall switches to control my smart bulbs, and a couple of in-wall switches that are a bit tricky to access. The thought of a catastrophic network failure keeps me up at night, imagining the chaos it would cause—especially if it means some lights might stay off indefinitely. My wife would definitely not be happy about that!

I’ve read a lot of forums where people mention issues with SD cards failing due to too many writes. To mitigate this, I’ve taken some precautions: I bought a UPS for my Raspberry Pi, adjusted the Recorder settings to reduce writes, and now back up my snapshots daily to the cloud. But even with all this, I’m still not fully confident. What if something goes wrong, and I need to restore from a backup? Will my Zigbee network still be up and running, or will I have to go through the painstaking process of re-pairing all my devices?

Here are the questions I’m struggling with:

  1. Do I need to perform a repair of my devices after restoring everything from a snapshot in case of an SD card failure?
  2. What if I have to switch to a new ConBee 2 stick because the old one fails? Will I need to repair all my devices again?
  3. Should I repair devices after updating the ConBee 2 firmware? I noticed mine is from May 2019 and is probably outdated.
  4. If my Raspberry Pi fails and I have to switch hosts, restoring from a snapshot—will my Zigbee network still work without issues?

I know these might sound like newbie questions, but I want to be prepared for the worst-case scenario. I’ve checked the Zigbee2mqtt documentation, but it doesn’t specifically address these concerns for the ConBee 2. I’m hoping someone out there has experience with this and can shed some light!

It’s a bit overwhelming, but I’m determined to get this right. After all, a smooth backup and recovery process is just as important as the automation itself. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s been through this and can offer tips or reassurance. Let’s make my smart home as resilient as possible!
