Zooz ZSE18 Motion Sensor: Testing and Insights

I’ve been experimenting with the Zooz ZSE18 motion sensor, and I wanted to share my experiences and findings with the community. For those who might not be familiar, this sensor is designed to detect motion and can operate on either battery power or USB power. I’ve tested both configurations, and here’s what I’ve discovered:

Battery vs. USB Power

  • Battery Power: The sensor works reliably on battery power. I tested it with fresh batteries, and it performed consistently without any issues. The battery life seems decent, though I haven’t had the chance to test it over an extended period.
  • USB Power: When connected to USB power, the sensor operates smoothly. I noticed that switching from battery to USB power without re-including the device didn’t cause any problems, but I wouldn’t recommend it as a standard practice since it might lead to unexpected behavior in some cases.

Power Source Notifications
One feature I’m particularly interested in is the ability to detect whether the sensor is running on battery or mains power. This could be useful for monitoring battery health or ensuring that the device remains functional during power outages. However, I’m still testing this functionality and haven’t confirmed if the sensor reliably sends power source notifications.

Testing and Development
I’ve been working on a custom driver for this sensor, and I’m eager to see how it performs in different scenarios. If anyone has a ZSE18 model included with USB power and is willing to test, I’d greatly appreciate it! This would help me verify whether the sensor sends power source notifications and ensure that the driver works as intended.

Community Collaboration
If you’re interested in contributing to this project or have any questions about the sensor’s functionality, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to share my findings and collaborate with others who are passionate about smart home technology.

Stay tuned for more updates as I continue testing and refining the driver. Happy tinkering!
