A Smooth Morning Routine with Homey

I’ve always been a fan of mornings, but getting out of bed on time has never been my forte. That’s why I decided to dive into the world of smart home automation with my new Athom Homey Pro. The goal was simple: create a seamless morning routine that gently wakes me up without the harsh jolt of a traditional alarm clock. Here’s how I did it and what I learned along the way!

The Setup
I started by connecting my Philips Hue lights, a Sonos speaker, and my coffee maker to the Homey hub. The idea was to have the lights gradually brighten, soft music play, and my coffee start brewing all at the same time. It sounds straightforward, but getting everything to sync perfectly was a bit of a challenge.

The Challenges
Initially, I faced some hiccups. The lights would sometimes flicker, and the music wouldn’t start at the exact right moment. After some research and trial and error, I realized the issue was with the timing settings in the Homey app. I needed to adjust the intervals so that each device had enough time to respond without overlapping.

The Solution
I broke down the routine into smaller steps:

  1. Turn on the bathroom light softly 10 minutes before wake-up time.
  2. Start brewing coffee 5 minutes before wake-up.
  3. Gradually increase the bedroom lights and play calming music at the set wake-up time.

This staggered approach ensured that everything worked in harmony. The result? A peaceful and efficient morning start that actually makes me look forward to waking up!

Lessons Learned

  • Timing is Everything: Even a 1-minute difference can make a big impact on how smoothly your routine runs.
  • Test, Test, Test: Don’t be afraid to tweak your settings multiple times. Each adjustment brings you closer to the perfect routine.
  • Keep It Simple: While it’s tempting to add every gadget to your routine, sometimes less is more. Focus on what truly enhances your morning.

I’m thrilled with how this project turned out and can’t wait to explore more ways to automate my daily life. If you’re thinking about diving into smart home automation, I say go for it—you might just find your new favorite way to start the day!
