Achieving Multi-User Access Management with Alexa and SmartThings

As a parent of two teenagers, managing smart home access for multiple users has been both a challenge and a learning experience. My goal was to ensure each child could control their own lights while also allowing access to a shared hallway light, all while keeping our family lights secure.

Initially, I set up three separate Alexa devices linked to different accounts, all connected to the same SmartThings hub. However, this approach didn’t allow me to restrict which devices each account could access. After some research, I discovered the potential of creating virtual devices within SmartThings to act as intermediaries, enabling selective control without compromising security.

I explored using WebCoRE for automation, which seemed promising but required a bit of trial and error. The key was setting up rules that mirrored the state of virtual devices to actual ones, ensuring each user could only interact with their designated lights. While this solution required some setup, it proved effective in maintaining a balance between accessibility and control.

This journey taught me the importance of understanding how different smart home ecosystems interact and the creativity needed to tailor solutions to specific needs. I’m grateful for the community resources and forums that provided guidance along the way. Happy automating!
