Hello all friends,
It’s a great pleasure to connect with everyone through this dedicated post on the Aqara Forum. Whether you know me or not, I always start with a brief self-introduction. This time, however, I would like to share a more detailed story about myself and my journey with Aqara.
I was born in 1986 and am now 40 years old, likely older than the majority of members in this community. I graduated from university in 2009 and entered the security camera industry roughly one year after graduation, starting out as a junior hardware maintenance engineer. Back then, most surveillance cameras still belonged to the CCTV era, featuring CCD sensors with a maximum resolution of merely 2 megapixels(1080p). Video footage was transmitted as analog signals via coaxial cables, unlike today’s digital transmission over network cables or Wi-Fi. I witnessed the industry’s full transition from analog to digital and was fortunate to be among the first batch of professionals working with IP cameras. This solid technical background laid a critical foundation for my later career shift to Product Manager.
I joined Aqara in April 2020. At that time, Aqara had a very limited overseas presence, with a narrow product lineup and small sales scale in global markets. Since joining the team, I led multiple industry-first milestones for Aqara cameras: enabling initial integration with Alexa and Google ecosystems, deploying Aqara’s in-house local AI algorithms directly on cameras, unlocking HomeKit functionality for battery-powered video doorbells, and launching the world’s first Matter Camera. I share these milestones not to boast, but to give everyone a clear, transparent look at every key stage of Aqara’s development in the camera segment.
How does Aqara define its surveillance camera products? Mainland China is home to numerous leading enterprises in this field, including Ezviz, Xiaomi, Eufy, Reolink, Tapo, Aosu and more. Many of my friends work at these outstanding brands, whose high-quality products serve as benchmarks for us to learn from and strive toward. As a technology company focused on whole-home smart devices and systematic smart home services, Aqara positions its cameras as more than standalone security devices—they function as core IoT sensors. Countless users who own other Aqara smart products are familiar with our robust automation and cross-device linkage capabilities. Every Aqara camera can seamlessly interact and trigger automated responses within the entire Aqara smart home ecosystem. Aqara is also nearly the only brand worldwide to integrate a built-in IoT hub directly into its cameras. This design choice has raised questions among some users, yet our core intention is simple: even if you only need a basic security camera for now, you can still access the full Aqara smart home experience without purchasing an additional dedicated hub. We will continue to refine our camera design philosophy, delivering industry-leading camera performance while preserving our unique whole-home automation and linkage advantages.
Data security and user privacy are frequent concerns and questions we receive from consumers. Some users hold reservations about products labeled “Made in China.” Setting aside ideological discussions entirely, I will clarify these doubts purely from a technical perspective. Starting with the Camera Hub G2H, every generation of Aqara cameras has supported Apple HomeKit, and we have always prioritized Apple’s end-to-end HomeKit Secure Video (HKSV) security framework. Building upon HKSV integration, Aqara developed our proprietary security authentication system — the Aqara Certificate System. Many users may have heard of security incidents involving competing brands: one user unexpectedly sees another stranger’s camera feed in their app, or unfamiliar voices appear out of nowhere on a surveillance device. Such issues are rarely caused by sophisticated hacking attacks; they mostly stem from non-standard manufacturing and maintenance processes. Repeated MAC addresses or serial numbers across different devices, a common flaw from irregular production management, drastically raises privacy and access risks. The Aqara Certificate System is designed to eliminate such risks: even if duplicate MAC or SN codes occur, only the legally authorized user can access and operate the corresponding camera. Beyond this core protection, our certificate system includes multi-layered defense mechanisms to fend off external network attacks. This comprehensive security architecture has passed rigorous data security testing in the European Union, fully validating its reliability.
Becoming a globally respected smart home brand is Aqara’s long-term vision. Respecting and safeguarding user privacy is our fundamental principle. We actively comply with local data security regulations and certifications across global regions, and continuously iterate our products based on user feedback regarding privacy and data protection needs. I believe our ongoing efforts in this regard have been clearly seen and recognized by our users.
Lastly, I will go through this discussion and compile a unified reply at a later time. I’ll do my best to provide honest and candid answers, whether the topics fall within my direct expertise or not. Thank you for your continuous support and love for Aqara. We sincerely welcome your ongoing feedback, which empowers us to create products that truly align with user needs and expectations.
