Aqara 1st Anniversary AMA: Ask @Aqara_PM_Donie Anything!

@Aqara_PM_Donie Can you please expose more settings for matter over thread? I have a number of your devices on thread but have very limited settings compared to zigbee?

I have Aqara bulbs, can we have some more dynamic scenes to choose from similar to Phillips Hue?

@Aqara_PM_Donie What’s the reasoning for having an apparent vendor lock on certain Zigbee attributes like 0x050a on lights which activates dynamic scenes and only accepts writes coming from an Aqara hub? There doesn’t seem to be any technical danger from not having such a lockdown so has it been implemented purely to stop a user having third-party systems access their devices full features.

Good morning,

Are there any plans to develop a camera that utilizes AI tracking with pan tilt and zoom? I admittedly am not the biggest fan of my Eufy cameras, but the one feature that keeps me from switching them out is the 360° tracking feature that virtually eliminates blindspots. I just can’t see myself switching to a camera with a fixed angle again as this feature is one of the few things I can say I’ve loved about my cameras.

That’s a tough but fair question! Region-locking is a common business strategy for global brands, and for Aqara, it comes down to a few key reasons:

  1. Cost & Market Fairness: Manufacturing, shipping, and marketing costs vary significantly between regions. Cross-region sales can disrupt local markets and make it difficult to maintain fair pricing for everyone.
  2. Hardware & Safety Standards: Products are often built to meet specific regional safety and technical standards. Using a device in a region it wasn’t designed for can lead to performance issues or even safety risks.
  3. Local Support & Dealers: Our local distributors are essential for providing the best after-sales service. Cross-region sales can hurt these local partners and make it much harder for you to get the support you need if something goes wrong.

We’ve tightened these policies based on past experiences and risks we encountered. Just because we were more relaxed about it in the past doesn’t mean it was the best long-term strategy for our users. International markets are a huge priority for us, and you’ll be seeing more and more of our product lineup launching globally soon.

Face recognition performance usually comes down to a few key factors:

  1. Lighting: Results can vary if a face is either overexposed or in deep shadow.
  2. Installation & Distance: In our testing, the G5 Pro handles recognition reliably at a distance of about 2–3 meters. It’s worth checking if your camera is mounted too high or if the downward angle is a bit too steep. We’ve also optimized recognition in our latest firmware, so definitely make sure you’re up to date!
  3. The HomeKit Difference: The reason HomeKit often feels more powerful is that it offloads the processing to your Apple Home Hub (like a HomePod or Apple TV). The computing power in those devices is significantly higher than the camera’s built-in SoC.

We’re continuing to push the limits of our on-device algorithms to make them as accurate as possible within the hardware’s capabilities.

I studied Electronic Information Science and Technology in university, where courses like Signals and Systems and Digital Signal Processing (DSP) really captured my interest. I actually started my career as a repair engineer for amplifiers, but I soon realized I wanted to work more with software. Transitioning into the camera field was the perfect fit—it allowed me to use my technical background to solve real-world imaging challenges. I’ve been rooted in this industry ever since.

The G5 Pro was a true labor of love for my team and me. We kicked off the project in late 2023, and to achieve that top-tier color night vision, we tested countless combinations of SoCs and image sensors before landing on the current hardware.
We also spent a massive amount of time on outdoor testing. Actually, I have a pretty funny story from that phase—we were struggling to find a place in the city that was truly pitch-black, so the team and I ended up driving to a cemetery in the middle of the night!

We went through six different versions of image tuning to get the results we wanted. Thermal management was also a huge challenge for a sealed device. We did extensive experiments with metal brackets and internal layouts, eventually using a mix of graphene, metal supports, and thermal silicone. It even passed our 3-month continuous direct sun exposure test.

We know the G5 Pro isn’t perfect. For example, the original bracket lacked horizontal adjustment—a design oversight we’ve already corrected in the latest production batches. We also know that the lack of IR night vision is a drawback for some users. We’re taking all these lessons to heart for our next generation of products. We’re already working on something that will surpass the G5 Pro, so stay tuned!

Great point, and we completely agree—consistency is crucial for a good user experience. Ideally, all AI features should run locally for the best speed and privacy, with the cloud reserved strictly for storage.
The reality, however, is that local hardware computing power and DDR resources vary significantly across models. For example, while the G5 Pro and G350 can handle multiple local AI functions, a model like the G100 only has the resources for human detection on-device. Moving certain algorithms to the cloud wasn’t about pushing subscriptions; it was about giving users the option to use advanced features on hardware that couldn’t otherwise handle them locally.
Moving forward, our strategy is to prioritize sufficient local processing power in our product design, ensuring that matching AI features run on the device itself rather than as a paid service.

Hi! We currently don’t have plans to add this feature. To help with the interference issue, we highly recommend locking your router’s 2.4GHz Wi-Fi channel. If you only lock the Zigbee or Thread channel, your dynamic Wi-Fi channel might eventually switch and overlap with them anyway, which would still cause conflicts. Hope this helps!

Appreciate the input! I’ve shared your suggestion about the group ‘toggle’ feature with the dev team. Regarding region-locking, please take a look at our response to @Arthur.

For dark mode on Android, it’s unfortunately not in our immediate plans right now, but we’ll keep your feedback in mind.

Yes, they will. However, because these are earlier models with limited hardware resources, they won’t be able to support the Matter 1.5/1.5.1 spec natively on their own. Instead, they will gain this support by being bridged through an M3 Hub. We don’t have a firm release date yet, so please keep an eye on our official announcements for updates!

Thanks for the suggestion—we’ll make sure to pass this idea along to our product team.

You’re absolutely right—outdoor PTZ and floodlight cameras are two of the most requested products we see. Since you’re working directly with clients, we’d love to get your input to help us shape the design. What specific features are they looking for most? For example:

  • Is 4K a must-have?
  • Do they prefer a dual-lens setup?
  • Is human tracking essential?
  • Should it be battery-powered or support 4G LTE?

We’d love to hear your thoughts so we can take them into account for our product planning!

We don’t have immediate plans for a rotary switch like that on our roadmap right now, but we’ve shared your suggestion with our product team for future consideration. Thanks for your suggestion!

Hi there! Thanks for your questions.
We really appreciate your interest in the U400! Be sure to keep an eye on the forum for all the latest release announcements!
Regarding your second question, our official website and the UK Aqara Shop actually use the exact same design and structure as our other regional sites. Could you share the specific URL you were visiting? We’d love to take a closer look at the mobile issues you mentioned.

When you open the main Aqara website in the select country/language there is no UK as from my understanding it work as a seperate website. The navigation and the whole UI in my opinion is worst than the original website which is made/designed for USA, EU and Asia. I think it should be connected to each other in the same way as you did for other countries.
