Aqara 4MP Camera Hub G5 Pro WiFi Melting

Hi All,

Thinking about buying a Aqara 4MP Camera Hub G5 Pro WiFi, but in the amazon reviews, i’m seeing a few people have posted pictures of the USB C cable melting.

What is that about? Anyone here experienced that or have any information as to whether or not this is a more widely reported/known problem?

Thanks!

I have a couple and they have had absolutely no problems what so ever. Melting cables with low voltage doesn’t seem to be possible in my book, but I’m no electrician of courses. However if you have the possibility to install POE version I would opt for those, but as stated my WiFi versions are working just fine.

A “weatherproof cover”, which can trap humid air and create a microclimate prone to condensation due to temperature fluctuations, was mentioned in the review I found. This moisture facilitates leakage currents and, more importantly, promotes corrosion at the pins. Over time, this corrosion increases contact resistance, leading to localized overheating and potentially a smoldering fire at the connector.

To avoid this, a completely airtight seal is often counterproductive as it traps humidity; a breathable design or controlled ventilation is far more effective. While a downward-facing port helps mitigate water ingress, an additional overhang or shielding is still advisable for full protection. Applying dielectric grease (silicone paste) is a highly effective way to protect the contacts from moisture ingress and prevent the corrosion that leads to these electrical failures by effectively displacing moisture and air at the connection point.

I myself own two G5 Pro cameras with Wi-Fi and PoE, and both work perfectly. I haven’t sealed the devices in waterproof or airtight packaging, nor have I used dielectric grease. I’ve simply mounted them under a canopy.
