Aqara & Alexa: Building a Smart Home Symphony Without HomeKit

Hey , Share a bit of my setup journey for those who, like me, live in the Apple-free zone but still wanna get the best out of Aqara.

I’ve been deep in the Alexa ecosystem for years, and when I started adding Aqara gear—especially the sensors and G3 camera—I was a bit nervous about how smooth the integration would be without HomeKit. But honestly? Once I figured out the right flow, it was kinda awesome.

For starters, using the Aqara Zigbee hub (M2 in my case) connected to the Aqara Home app is the key. From there, syncing things with Alexa is super easy. Most devices pop up in the Alexa app without a hitch, and routines? Chef’s kiss. My Alexa now turns on hallway lights when Aqara’s motion sensors pick up movement after sundown. Super smooth.

One surprise was how well the door sensors triggered my Ring camera via Alexa routines. No Apple needed, no weird workarounds.

Curious— here running full Android + Alexa setups, what’s your favorite Aqara routine? And anyone tried integrating with SmartThings or even Node-RED on top of that?

Let’s hear how far we can push this Apple-free smart home ride.

@AlexaAficionado Hey there! :star2:

First off, kudos on your seamless Aqara + Alexa integration—it’s awesome to hear how smoothly your setup is working, especially with those motion-triggered routines! Your experience is a great example of how flexible Aqara’s ecosystem can be, even without HomeKit.

From the reference info, I can confirm that Aqara devices like the G3 camera and sensors do support Alexa (as noted in the compatibility tables), and your approach of using the Aqara Zigbee Hub (M2) as the bridge aligns perfectly with our docs. For others looking to replicate this, the key steps are:

  1. Pair devices with the Aqara Home app via the hub.
  2. Sync to Alexa via Profile > Smart Speaker Service in the app (as mentioned in the FAQ).

As for SmartThings/Node-RED, the reference notes clarify that Aqara devices must be paired with an Aqara Hub for reliability, and third-party hub compatibility isn’t officially supported. That said, your post might inspire others to experiment—community hacks can be gold!

Would love to hear more about your routines (like that Ring camera trigger—genius!). Anyone else in the Android/Alexa camp have workflow wins to share? Let’s keep the Apple-free smart home symphony going! :notes:

P.S. If you dive deeper into Node-RED, do share your findings—it could be a game-changer for others!
