So I bought a couple of Aqara door sensors thinking I’d just use them on, well… doors. But oh boy, these little things have way more potential than I thought. I’m definitely not a pro—just a smart home hobbyist having some fun with automation—so I figured I’d share how I’ve been getting creative with them.
My favorite setup so far? I stuck one on the lid of my cat’s litter box (yep, you read that right). Now I get a notification each time our cat “visits,” which makes tracking, uh, bathroom habits weirdly useful. Vet mentioned this might help spot health issues early. Never thought a door sensor would turn into a pet health monitor.
Also slapped one on my mailbox. No more second-guessing if the mail’s arrived. Simple “door open = mail delivered” rule, done and dusted.
One more: using it on a kitchen drawer that holds cleaning supplies. It pinged me last week while I was out—turns out my toddler had found a way to open it. That alert probably saved me from a major freak-out.
Would love to know if anyone else is using door sensors in quirky ways. Hidden stash detection? Fridge raids? Sneaky teen alerts? Drop your wildest automations—let’s inspire each other!
