I purchased this item on Amazon. The door latch will only open if lifted upwards, but not downward. I believe it is defective. How can I remedy this as this is hard to open the dork as most people’s tendency is to pull the lever downward.

This problem with my door latch is at my 2nd home out of state. I just left there yesterday and will not return until October 1 on my next so I can not yet send you a video until then. Nevertheless, it’s quite simple. When I tried to open the door by swinging the handle or lever downward, the door would not open and the latch bolt would not move. However, if I swing the handle or lever upward, the latch bolt retracts and opens the door perfectly. I don’t understand why. Please help. Thank you.
