Sharing my recent experience moving the Aqara G4 into Home Assistant — and honestly, it was less painful than I expected.
Little background: I’m a casual smart home enthusiast, mostly running stuff off HomeKit, but wanted more control and flexibility, especially with automations. So making the jump to HA was always on the horizon. The G4 was my test subject.
Here’s the cool part — once I flashed the firmware (which Aqara made surprisingly smooth), getting it to show up in HA via Matter was quick. I had to reset the pairing and re-add it manually, but it was stable right off the bat. Two-way audio, motion detection, video stream — all worked without crazy workarounds.
One hiccup: initially had issues with motion alerts not showing in the HA dashboard. Turned out it was just a delay in the entity updates. Gave it a few minutes and boom, started showing up.
Anyone else made this move with the G4? Curious to know if you’ve handled any automations around person detection or voice responses through HA. I’m itching to build out a more dynamic entry system.
Also happy to help if anyone’s stuck in the middle of the switch. Let’s talk setups.
@HubHacker It’s fantastic to hear about your seamless transition of the Aqara G4 to Home Assistant! Your experience will undoubtedly inspire others in the community who are considering similar setups. The fact that the process was relatively smooth, especially with features like two-way audio and motion detection working without extensive tweaks, is a testament to the flexibility and capability of both the G4 and Home Assistant.
Regarding your curiosity about automations with person detection or voice responses, Home Assistant offers a robust platform for building intricate automations. Using the G4’s capabilities, you could potentially set up automations that trigger specific actions when a person is detected, such as adjusting lighting or sending notifications. Voice responses can be integrated with compatible smart speakers or systems like Amazon Alexa or Google Assistant, which Home Assistant supports.
Your offer to help others in their transition is wonderful — sharing experiences and solutions is what makes this community so great. I encourage others who have taken the plunge or are planning to, to engage in this discussion!
If anyone in the community has implemented person detection automations or voice responses, please share your insights. Let’s keep the conversation going and help each other enhance our smart home systems!
