Aqara G400 doesn’t work with apple face recognition

Hi everyone, today I bought and installed my first Aqara products in an Apple HomeKit ecosystem. I’ve bought a g400 doorbell and g5 pro camera.

All went smoothly and got the main things working. The one thing that doesn’t seem to work is using my apple cloud photos to recognise faces with names I gave to these faces. All faces the doorbell or camera is seeing is seen as a new face and need to enter a name whilst is like to use the names I already maintain within the apple photos app.

New photos in apple photo app recognise me. Tried during off the face recognition and wait 30 seconds and then hope it synchronises but still doesn’t recognise existing faces?

Anyone who experienced this too and knows how to get that working?

Hello, welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately, in G400, facial recognition is only available from the Aqara cloud (subscription). The technical parameters of G400 allow local recognition only of the presence of a person (this is the design of G400). You can also do facial recognition when subscribing to HomeKit…

Thank you @gafich10. I’m also subscribed to Apple cloud subscription and in Apple’s HomeKit home app I switch the user recognition on and this is where messages I receive from the apple home app doesn’t give the name when a person is detected.
I’ve tried resting the switch in the home app as suggested but it still doesn’t pick this up so I need to enter names multiple times. How can I get the doorbell and HomeKit home app to recognise names of people defined in the photos app (with apple cloud subscription).

Thanks again for your kind response!

Take a look in the Apple Home app under

Home Settings → Cameras & Doorbells

  1. Under Allow Notifications From, you need to check for each camera/doorbell if Activity Notifications, Specific Motion is Detected and People Are Detected are enabled. There you can also enable Allow Snapshots in Notifications (this works for the G5, but not for the G410, not sure if that works with the G400).
  2. Under Face Recognition, it must of course be activated. Under [Your Name]'s Library, it needs to be set to Everyone in this Home, and if you go to Add Names in Photos, you should see the photos of the people in the household, or you can add them via the +.

Unfortunately, I can’t confirm if this works since I don’t have the subscription, but theoretically, it should work like this with a subscription and an existing Apple Home hub.

I’m ready to help, unfortunately I don’t use HomeKit.

Yes, I use it and that reads correct after checking my settings. I even checked my Aqara app and I have facial recognition turned off.

I’ve never understood this feature, it’s backwards. I don’t want to know when a person I know is at the door. I want to know when a stranger is at the door.

I created an automation to announce strangers which is much more important to me.

Thank you for the confirmation. I use this in Home Assistant, not Apple Home, to verify the presence of a specific person. My automations are set up to behave differently depending on the situation. For example: The notification that the washing machine has finished is only sent to the person who is at home, not to the person who is at work. However, facial recognition is just one of many factors used for presence detection.

Thank you @JohnD and all settings are indeed set like you mention though they don’t recognise any face from the photos library.

This would give me the ability to know who is at the door when they come close to the doorbell camera and I can use it for not sending a notification when there are trusted members for which I have their name in my photos.

@srl77411 if you use Apple home app (HomeKit), do you then see the family members names you have the Apple photos app listed when a notification appears?

My intent is for the same, in the Apenhome app I can exclude notifications for listed members so would like to know when someone comes to the door who that is when know by me in the photos app and for some exclude a notification to be sent.

Which iCloud subscription do you have? Could it be that your plan only covers one camera, and that’s why it isn’t working?

For reference, here are the iCloud+ plans and their camera limits for HomeKit Secure Video:

  • 50 GB: 1 camera
  • 200 GB: Up to 5 cameras
  • 2 TB, 6 TB, or 12 TB: Unlimited cameras

Thank you for the support @JohnD, I’ve got the 2 TB subscription.

If this doesn’t work I’ll give names in the app versus in photos and see how that works.

Thank you again.

Yes, I see the same name as it’s listed in Apple’s Photo Library. I do from time to time open the Home app, go into the camera settings-Face Recognition and under recents name faces correctly for various reasons.

Be sure you have an activity zone drawn in the Apple Home app. You can find that under camera settings.
