The Aqara P100 Multi-State Sensor is finally here and I would like to share a few first impressions. (I’m currently on a business trip, the device hasn’t been connected to the system yet, but these are initial impressions from the “hands-on” feel.)
In the Box
• The Sensor: A matte black unit.
• Protective Cover: A transparent cover with pre-applied 3M adhesive.
• Extra Adhesives: Two additional grey adhesive strips for versatile mounting.
• Documentation: A quick-start manual and warnings.
Note on Models: This is the P100 Kit (VB-S03D) . There is also a VB-S03E model, I suppose in E variation some items are omitted. Similar to the FP300 (PS-S04D with magnetic plate and screws vs. PS-S04E without) or the W100 (TH-S04D with wall bracket vs. TH-S04E without).
Size & Design
• Dimensions: 45 × 31 × 13 mm (1.77 × 1.22 * 0.51 in.)
I don’t have the old vibration sensor nearby for a direct comparison, so I’ve placed it next to an Apple Watch Series 10 (46mm) to give you a sense of scale. The P100 is compact but feels dense and well-built. Unlike the predecessor, this product is available in both white and dark gray versions. The gray one I have on hand has a “Pro” look and vibe to it, feeling somewhat premium and discreet for modern home interiors.
The device is thicker than the previous version, measuring in at 13 mm. In this extra depth it accommodates the much larger CR2450 battery and complex 9-axis sensor array (accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer).
Build & (Lack of) Weatherproofing
The backplate features a twist-lock design , which was easy to open by gently pressing the battery cover and rotating it - no struggling with coins!
(Just didn’t want to hide the sensor behind my thick fingers, therefore gently pressing on the battery cover here with the Apple Pencil.)
At a glance, the device does not look water-resistant. The battery cover on my unit doesn’t appear to use a rubber O-ring seal to protect the battery and logic board from dust or water. Another potential entry point for moisture is the reset button area.
In fact, the manual explicitly instructs users to protect the device from moisture, water, and other liquids.
The Protective Cover
Given the lack of built-in sealing, it is nice to have a choice of a kit version with dedicated protective cover included. We can try at our own risk to use it in more “active” environments where there might be occasional water droplets or dust. By attaching the case to a smooth surface with the 3M adhesive, it should somewhat isolate the device from the outside world (though our mailboxes are usually dry inside anyway, right folks?
)
That’s all for now. Later, I’ll update the post with screenshots of the app settings and my usage experience. I’m excited to test its features, particularly those related to tilt state detection.
