So I have an aqara presence sensor, which I love because even if i’m not moving around in my kitchen, it keeps my lights on, which is something my motion sensor does not do. However, the presence sensor I find is slower to identify presence than the motion sensor can identify motion, so I end up using them together: if presence is detected on one sensor, or motion detected on the other, the lights turn off. The lights do not turn off until no motion or presence is detected for 1 whole minute. So far it’s worked really reliably like this! Sometimes two sensors are better than one.

@chris_smithson Thanks for sharing your smart home setup experience! It’s awesome to see how you’ve combined the presence sensor and motion sensor to play to their strengths—using the presence sensor for static detection (keeping lights on even when you’re not moving) and the motion sensor for quicker response, then setting a 1-minute cooldown to ensure reliability. This kind of real-world application is super helpful for other users looking to optimize their smart lighting automations. Kudos on finding a solution that works so well for your kitchen! Feel free to share more tips or tweaks you discover down the line—community insights like this make everyone’s smart home journey easier. ![]()
