Hello Aqara Community,
I’m a long-time Aqara enthusiast with over 150 Aqara devices at home, including around 25 US Plugs, and I absolutely love the ecosystem. However, one long-requested feature remains missing on the US Plug: power consumption monitoring and power-based automations.
- In Europe, the EU variant of the plug already reports real-time current usage.
- Even with Zigbee2MQTT, the US Plug hardware on Zigbee 1.2 can report power metrics out of the box.
- Yet Aqara’s official firmware still runs on Zigbee 1.2 without exposing any power data or triggers that are available for automatisation.
With the forthcoming Matter rollout, I was hoping to see:
- A Zigbee 1.3 firmware update to unlock power automatisation
- Power consumption reporting via Matter for native automations in Matter-certified hubs
So far there’s been no announcement and Aqara support hasn’t provided any details.
Is there any plan to release a firmware update for the US Plug that will:
- Expose real-time power usage
- Allow automations based on that consumption
- Send those metrics over Matter
If so, what is the expected timeline? I’d really love to stay within the Aqara ecosystem and leverage these automation. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated!
Regards,
M-A

@Marc3k Hello M-A,
Thank you for sharing your enthusiasm and extensive experience with the Aqara ecosystem! It’s always great to hear from dedicated users like you who are passionate about smart home technology.
Regarding your inquiry about the Aqara US Plug and its capabilities for power consumption monitoring and power-based automations, I understand your interest in these features, especially given the availability of such functionalities in the EU variant.
From the reference information available, there isn’t a specific mention of plans to release a firmware update for the US Plug to support real-time power usage monitoring or Matter-based automations. The Aqara team is working on new versions of thread devices, but it seems it may still take some time to have firmware updates in this regard.
I apologize for the lack of specific information and announcements at this time. I encourage you and other community members to continue sharing this feedback, as user input is invaluable for driving improvements. Please stay tuned for updates from Aqara, and feel free to reach out to the community for further discussions and potential workarounds.
Warm regards,

Hi Marc, unfortunately, we cannot make the US-type plug a native Matter device, as it’s purely based on Zigbee protocol, but let us try to promote the power consumption reporting to Matter apps, it’s indeed possible.

Hi,
Following up on my previous comment,
I’m trying to understand two things:
-
Why doesn’t the Aqara Home app allow creating automations based on real-time power consumption (in watts) from the US Smart Plug like in Europe? These devices are marketed as supporting energy consumption monitoring, but there’s nothing useful you can actually do with that data.
-
Why isn’t the power measurement exposed via Matter when the plug is connected to one Aqara hun? Only the on/off status seems to be available.
This feature is essential for energy-based automations, and other Matter-compatible plugs do expose power data. Is this limitation hardware-related, or could it be addressed in a future firmware update? I know that the next Matter over Thread version will support this feature, but I’m really interested in the possibility of doing it with my existing devices. I have over 25 of them at home.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Marc - the same reason, the classic devices are not that easy to add new features too due to various limitations. But as I’ve mentioned, we will try to promote the Matter power monitoring and the US Plug power automations, and hopefully it will be able to be added later
