I created an automated on/off bathroom fam with the Aqara Zigbee Temperature and Humidity sensors. Our bathroom exhaust fans turn on whenever humidity gets over 80% and turns back off when humidity drops under 80%. We run this automation through Apple Home and it has worked flawlessly for months.
We have two bathrooms and four kids. Everyone remembering to turn on the bathroom fan never worked. Our bathrooms started smelling bad from the constant humidity. These sensors and matter connected wall switches helped me automate running the bathroom fan. This completely solved the humidity issues we had and saved our bathrooms.
Congratulations – that’s a textbook Smart Home win! Real problem, real solution, real impact.
But isn’t 80% very high? Anyway, if it works for you…
And now that you’ve conquered humidity, why stop there? You could pair your light switch with a presence sensor, so your kids never have to remember to turn the light on (or off). And if you swap out the bulbs for smart dimmable ones, you can set the nighttime lighting to low brightness – perfect for those midnight bathroom missions without getting fully blinded or accidentally achieving full consciousness.
Always remember: “If your car is smarter than your home… you’re driving into the future while living in the past”
Great idea. I have extractor fan isolator switches in each bathroom and your post has now got me wondering how I can make them smart to work with humidity sensors
Not sure there are smart isolator switches but there are smart extractor fans though they’re a lot more expensive
I am planning to do exactly the same in future. I have started preparing for it. I got the Hub M3, Replaced my bathroom light switch to turn and the air diffuser also turns on when my presence sensor senses someone is inside washroom. The next one is going to be my exhaust. I want to put the Temperature and humidity sensor to automatically trigger my exhaust, but I might want to trigger it somewhere around 70%. Very useful automation though! Thanks for sharing.
I have been working on ways to reduce humidity levels in my home as well. One of the simplest ways to reduce humidity in our laundry room is to turn on the exhaust fan. But I started noticing that the family did not turn on the fan consistently. So I put a smart plug on the washing machine that measures power. I also installed a smart switch for the fan. Now when the washer is turned on, the fan automatically turns on too. When the washer is finished I then set a timer for 20 minutes to keep the fan running longer to control the humidity. When the timer runs out it shuts the fan off. So this way no one has to remember to turn the fan on and off. Works like a charm and is helping reduce humidity in my house.
