I’ve been trying to automate my dog’s water bowl to prevent spills and ensure they always have fresh water. Let me walk you through my journey and the solutions I’ve come up with so far.**The Problem:**I recently renovated my home, and with three dogs, keeping the floors dry has been a constant challenge. My dogs tend to spill water, and with the new floor materials, it’s become a bigger issue. I wanted a system that would automatically maintain the water level and prevent spills.**The Idea:**I came across the concept of using a sensor to monitor the water level in the bowl. The idea is to keep the water at a consistent 1-1.5 inches deep. This would prevent spills and ensure my dogs always have access to fresh water. I also thought about connecting this system to the main water supply, which would provide an unlimited water source and allow for regular cleaning and filtering.**The Setup:**I decided to use a long, shallow bowl to minimize spillage. I chose a ‘no spill’ bowl that only holds about 2 liters of water, which works well for my three dogs. To maintain the water level, I installed a sensor in the bowl. This sensor detects when the water level drops below the desired level and triggers a refill mechanism.**The Refill Mechanism:**I considered two options for refilling the bowl: using gravity or a pump. I opted for a pump system connected to the main water supply. This setup allows for a controlled flow of water and ensures the bowl is always topped up as needed. I also added a filter to the water supply to keep the water clean and prevent bacterial growth.**Challenges and Solutions:**One of the main challenges was finding the right sensor that could reliably detect the water level. After some research, I settled on a sensor that uses ultrasonic technology to measure the water level accurately. Another challenge was ensuring the pump operated efficiently without wasting water. I programmed the system to only activate when the sensor detects a drop in water level, which helps conserve water.**Future Plans:**I’m really happy with how the system is working so far, but I have some future improvements in mind. I plan to add a mobile app notification system to alert me if there’s a malfunction or if the water level isn’t being maintained properly. I also want to explore adding a camera to monitor the bowl and ensure my dogs are accessing the water safely.**Conclusion:**This project has been a great learning experience, and I’m thrilled with the results.
