Automating My Bathroom Pocket Door: A Fun DIY Project

Hey everyone! I wanted to share a fun project I recently completed that’s been a huge help around my tiny house in rural Japan. I’ve been lazy about closing the bathroom door, but now I’ve got an automatic sliding door that closes when we go in and out—talk about luxury!

A few months ago, I stumbled upon an automatic/magnetic sliding track from a seller in China. It seemed like the perfect solution to keep the bathroom private while still being able to enjoy the open front windows of my house. The best part? The door has an app where you can control settings!

Curious about how it all works, I decided to reverse engineer the app using a bluetooth sniffer and an Olimex esp32 bluetooth proxy. After some tinkering, I was able to integrate it as a switch in Home Assistant. Now, I can control the door right from my control panel!

Here are some cool use cases I’ve thought of:

  • Automatically opening the door when the robot vacuum starts cleaning
  • Opening and keeping the door open at night or when the lights are dim

I even made a quick video to show it off, though it’s hosted on Google Drive for now. The door closes faster than it opens, which is a fun little detail!

I’d love to hear if anyone else has done something similar or has ideas for other smart home hacks. Let’s keep the creativity flowing!

Cheers,
