Automating My Chicken Feeder: A Fun Smart Home Project

Hey everyone, I wanted to share a fun project I recently completed using my SmartThings setup. I’ve been looking for a way to automate my chicken feeder to prevent raccoons and possums from raiding it at night. After some research, I came across an automatic chicken feeder that uses a step-on platform to dispense food. While it’s a great product, I wanted to add an extra layer of security to keep those clever critters out!

I decided to use a linear actuator connected to a Z-Wave outlet. The actuator slides under the feeder’s pedal, preventing it from being triggered by unwanted visitors. I set up a routine in SmartThings to activate the actuator at sunset and deactivate it at sunrise. This way, my chickens can access their food during the day, and the feeder stays locked at night.

The setup was a bit tricky, but with some trial and error, it’s working perfectly now. It’s amazing how a little automation can solve such a specific problem. Plus, it’s been a fun way to integrate my smart home system into my backyard! If anyone has similar ideas or tips, I’d love to hear them. Happy automating! :chicken::sparkles:
