Brain of my smart home is home assistant. My goal is to trigger face recognition on one of the Accara cameras and then do something in home assistant. The only work around I found is to have an Aqara plug that Aqara controls and have home assistant pick up on a state change on that device.
In the face recognition automation, I know there’s other tools like Frigate, but I’m running HA on a green that doesn’t have the horsepower to do this. Plus, if I want the automation to do something else, I still need a 3rd party trigger.
Couldn’t Aqara just add a web hook or URL that you call to then port this automation over to a 3rd party system of my choice? Seems like it should be pretty straightforward. Would love to know if there’s any plans for Aqara to do this.
Does your Home Assistant action need to know which person was recognised, or just that a familiar face was seen? A plug used as a simple on/off signal carries only a yes/no state, not a person’s identity. There is also a repeat-trigger edge case. If HA waits for an off-to-on transition, a second recognition while the plug is still on will not create another off-to-on transition. Home Assistant documents that distinction here.
Which camera model are you using, and which integration connects it to Home Assistant? Those details would help check whether the required event or identity is already exposed. I would not assume that Aqara Home’s facial-recognition triggers are available in HA merely because the camera is connected.
Yes need person’s identity. I’m using this automation to know who does the laundry. Have lots of parts to this but it begins with the kids scanning a RFID tag on the washer and dryer.
Change would be to use the Aqara G100 to see who is in the room and turn on the machines and log they are the ones who did it. Using RTP via Generic Camera add-on.
Open to purchasing another video cam if that helps. I did a test with the G100 and the app detects ME and plays a sound specific to my detection. I just can’t pass this from Aqara app to HA.
That identifies the missing link. Generic Camera is an image/video connection. I would not treat it as a feed of Aqara Home’s named-person recognition results. The app playing your personal sound and HA receiving a video stream are separate outputs. I have not verified a supported G100 identity-event route for your setup, so I would not buy another camera solely for this yet.
For the laundry log, I would keep the RFID scan as the explicit confirmation step until that identity-event path is verified. A recognised person being in the room does not confirm that they operated either machine. If you later test another integration, check consenting household members separately, together in the room and on repeated visits before using its events for attribution.
Is this a way to keep track of who does their chores? Could you choose a more standalone solution for the laundry room; a camera that sends motion notifications with a still image (I accept there are privacy concerns for most brands).
