Automations with H1 Switches not completing (with Hub M3 and Gen 2 Philips Hue Bridge)

Hi,

I have been having some issues in recent months with my M3 Hub, H1 Light Switch, and Hue Bridge and Bulb setup. Back before around June 2025 I didn’t have any issues but at some point my switches stopped working properly.

I have 2 wireless double rocker H1 switches configured into multi-function mode and I use them to control Philips Hue bulbs via an M3 Hub and Gen 2 Philips Hue Bridge and various bulb types. The Philips Hue app has no issues controlling the bulbs so I know that link is good.

I’ve setup my H1 switches with automations for:

  • Right Single Click + Bulb Off: Turn light on bright (5000K, 100%, On)
  • Left Single Click + Bulb Off: Turn light on warm (2000K, 40%, On)
  • Right Double Click + Bulb On: Increase brightness
  • Left Double Click + Bulb On: Decrease brightness
  • Right Single Click + Bulb On: Turn light off
  • Left Single Click + Bulb On: Turn light off

A single press of the right button works fine - the bulb changes colour, brightness, and turns on.

However, a single press of the left button doesn’t. By watching the Aqara Home card for the bulb I can see the first time I press the button ONLY the brightness and temperature change, but the command to turn the bulb on doesn’t seem to go through. The Aqara Home app says Automation Success but the bulb hasn’t actually turned on and the Aqara app is aware of this. Single-clicking the left button a 2nd time with turn the bulb on.

Single left click when the bulb is on (to turn the bulb off) works fine. The increase/decrease brightness automations also work fine.

It seems to me the Hub M3 is only pushing through 2 out of the 3 desired commands (brightness (check), temperature (check), on/off (fail)). This didn’t use to be the case though. This all used to work flawlessly in early 2025.

I’ve tried a 2nd Hub M3 - that didn’t help. I haven’t tried another Hue Bridge or brand new switches.

Currently, my smart home is dreadful for anyone but myself who understands these quirks (not that I’m willing to tolerate them for much longer either). Has anyone else had this issue, or something similar? Any recommended fixes or solutions?

Hello, welcome to the forum.
Try putting a 1 second delay between commands. Just curious, maybe something in the command algorithm was changed. I fixed some problems with serial commands in automations this way. Post a screenshot of the automation screen.

Hi. I had a few creeping problems a while ago. I know how much of a pain it can be. I am assuming that you have a fair few devices that you have added over a period of time. If that assumption is true, I know it will be a pain, but try my solution here - A full reset can be worth it sometimes

After doing this, my home has been running smoothly for about 6 months (maybe more). It’s worth the effort. Hope this helps.

Hello, firstly can you indicate if the automations are still on version 1.00 or 2.00

What ever is the version I would probably re-create the autonomations and probably create them in version 2.00

Are you creating a scene and calling the scene from automation? Or creating everything within an automation?

I’ve found for the best reliability is to create the scene to switch on and set brightness etc and then call the scene from the automation.

If non of the above works then factory reset the H1 Wireless switch and add back into the M3 hub and re-create automations.
