Avoirdupois and Apothecaries Weight Conversion

Hello everyone, I’ve recently been trying to wrap my head around the conversion between avoirdupois and apothecaries weights, and I thought I’d share my journey and maybe get some tips from the community.

Avoirdupois is the system we’re most familiar with in everyday use, right? It’s the one where 16 ounces make a pound, and it’s used for most goods except for precious metals and medicines. On the other hand, apothecaries weights are used in pharmacies and for precious metals, and it’s a bit different. It uses drams, scruples, and minims, which I find fascinating but also a bit confusing.

I came across this conversion chart, and I thought it might be helpful for others who are trying to understand the relationship between these two systems. Here’s a quick overview:

  • Avoirdupois Ounce (oz): 1 ounce is equal to approximately 18.2292 apothecaries drams.
  • Apothecaries Dram (ʒ): 1 dram is equal to 1/8 of an apothecaries ounce or 3 scruples.
  • Apothecaries Scruple (s): 1 scruple is equal to 20 minims.
  • Apothecaries Minim (:scorpius:): This is the smallest unit in the apothecaries system.

I’ve been practicing some conversions, and it’s been a bit of a brain teaser. For example, converting 2 avoirdupois ounces to apothecaries drams would be 2 * 18.2292, which is approximately 36.4584 drams. It’s all about understanding the ratios and the historical context behind these systems.

I also found it interesting how these systems are still relevant today, especially in specialized fields like pharmacy and precious metal trading. It makes me appreciate the diversity and history behind different measurement systems.

If anyone has any tips or resources that could help me (and others) better understand these conversions, I’d love to hear about them! Maybe there’s a handy app or a mnemonic that could make this process smoother.

Thanks for reading, and I look forward to your insights!
