Battery drain too fast on Matter sensors - Suggestions?

Hey everyone, I’m kinda stumped here and could use some help.

I added a bunch of Matter-compatible sensors (mostly Aqara) around my place about a month ago—door/window sensors, temp sensors, motion detectors, the usual smart home stuff. Everything’s been super smooth in terms of function, BUT the battery life is terrible. Like, already replacing batteries on two of them. What gives??

Setup-wise, I’ve got them hooked into a Home Assistant setup via a Matter bridge, and most of them are only triggered a few times a day. They’re not pinging like crazy or anything.

Anyone else seeing stupid fast drain like this? Is it a pairing/setup issue, or do some brands just eat batteries for breakfast?

If you’ve got tips on battery-saving settings, or maybe certain brands/models that actually deliver on “low-power,” I’m all ears. At this rate, I’ll go broke buying coin cells…

Hello, I have exactly the same problem. I have read the advice. One of my Door P2 sensors is quickly draining the battery. Could the fact that I have associated it (in test mode) with the “Basic Guard Alarm” functions be the cause? Or is it a malfunction of the sensor.

It is surprising that the sensor battery is that low already granted the hub is one floor up and outside camera and doorbell

Also I can’t figure out how to open the battery compartment??

Sooo, how do you suggest I mount my contact sensor to my METAL sliding glass door?

My G350 camera is just 12 feet from the contact sensor with nothing between. The G350 is a thread border router, correct? And nothing happens when I press the P2 sensor’s reset button.

I’m not so sure it is malfunction. I’ve got seen similar behaviour if Thread has an issue. It’s almost like the device is continually trying to reconnect… and so drains the battery. I’ve seen it with Aqara and other vendors.

Is your device near a Thread Router (Not border router)? These are usually mains powered and are usually light bulbs and/or smart plugs, etc

This makes totally sense! More reconnects means more power consumption or when the border router is too far away, I think it needs more power to stay connected.

or you need a more complete Thread Mesh with a powered device, such as a light or smart plug in between.

Well, I’m new to all of this, so I’ll do my best. I have that cute Aqara camera with the ears close by. It’s plugged in (on mains). Don’t know if that’s a thread router or not.
Your suggestion sounds smart. I’m going to move my 2nd generation homepod close to the door. That’s a thread router, right. I’ll see if that fixes things.

You should be able to find out what model you have from the Aqara app. There are multiple “cure Aqara Cameras with the ears” :smiley:

My ears camera is the G350. It is a “Built on Thread Border Router.” So, is that a thread router? I’m guessing, not necessarily.
I also have the Aqara M3 hub, several water leak detectors and a valve that shuts off the water in case of a leak. And the Aqara Smartlock U400, and the G410 doorbell cam (wired).

Yes a Thread Border Router is also a Thread Router.

So I think that puts my theory out of the window.

Here’s an update on the battery drain and metal doors. To determine whether the metal door is the issue, I swapped two of my P2 door sensors. I did nothing else. The P2 sensor now on the metal door is holding its charge just fine. Recall that the first sensor I had on this door lost half of its charge after just one day.
Seems that I just have a bad sensor.
Thanks to those of you who offered suggestions.

Quick update. The Door sensor P2 that drained batteries within days on the metal door has now killed a brand new battery on a normal door. This P2 is clearly defective. BTW, the P2 I moved to the metal door still has a full charge. So I have no clear evidence that the metal door is an issue. Just a QC issue.
