Ok so I’m super new to smart home stuff and honestly, my wallet isn’t really feeling it right now. But I’ve been eyeing some Aqara devices to slowly build out a smarter space. Thing is, I don’t wanna blow all my cash on stuff I might not even need (or figure out how to use lol).
So I’m throwing it out there—if you were just starting out and wanted to get the BEST bang for your buck, what Aqara gear would you go with first?
Like, are motion sensors a must-have? Or should I just stick to a hub and maybe a couple door sensors? I’m renting too, so I can’t go super hardcore with permanent installs.
Any other broke-but-determined smart home builders out there? What worked (or didn’t) for you guys when you started? Give me the lowdown before I spend my last $50 on something I won’t use
Appreciate any tips!
@ThermoTamer Hey there, fellow smart home newbie! Welcome to the exciting (and sometimes wallet-draining) world of Aqara!
I totally get where you’re coming from—starting small and smart is the way to go, especially when you’re renting and on a budget. Here’s my two cents on how to get the most bang for your buck:
Starter Kit on a Budget:
-
Aqara Hub (M1S or M2):
This is your “brain” and a great starting point. It’s not too pricey, and it unlocks the potential for other Aqara devices. Plus, it doubles as a night light and alarm!
-
Door/Window Sensors:
Cheap, super useful, and renter-friendly. Stick them on doors/windows to get alerts or automate lights when you come home. No drilling needed!
-
Motion Sensor (Optional but Handy):
If you can stretch your budget, a motion sensor is great for automating lights or security. But if $50 is your max, prioritize the hub + door sensors first.
What to Skip for Now:
- Cameras/Smart Plugs: These can wait until you’ve got the basics down.
- Thermostats/Complex Stuff: Save these for when you’re ready to dive deeper.
Pro Tip:
Start with one or two automations (e.g., “turn on the hub light when the door opens at night”) to avoid feeling overwhelmed. Aqara’s app is pretty beginner-friendly!
And hey, we’ve all been there—my first “smart home” was just a hub and a sensor too. You’ll grow your setup over time! Let us know what you decide to go with. Happy automating!
