Binding Clusters – Feature Request & Roadmap Question

Hello all. :slight_smile:

I have a question regarding Matter Binding Cluster support on the Aqara H2 Switches and Dimmers.

I’m referring to the Matter Binding Cluster (Cluster ID 0x001E), which enables direct device-to-device communication without relying on a controller or hub for every interaction.

Why is the Matter Binding Cluster still not supported on the H2 Switches and Dimmers? Is this feature on your roadmap, or are there currently no plans to implement it?

From a user’s perspective, the lack of Binding Cluster support significantly limits interoperability and prevents users from taking full advantage of one of Matter’s key capabilities.

Some of the disadvantages of not supporting the Matter Binding Cluster include:

  • No direct device-to-device communication between Matter devices.
  • Increased latency, since every command has to pass through a controller or automation.
  • Reduced reliability, as automations may stop working if the controller is unavailable.
  • More complex setup for simple scenarios, such as directly linking a switch or dimmer to a light.
  • Less flexibility when combining Matter devices from different manufacturers.
  • Reduced local resilience, since devices cannot continue to interact directly if the controller is offline.
  • Missed opportunities for faster response times, lower network traffic, and lower power consumption.

Of course, I understand that every company wants to build an attractive ecosystem and encourage customers to stay with its products. That’s a perfectly reasonable business goal. However, I don’t believe that support for the Matter Binding Cluster is the kind of feature that keeps customers loyal to a particular ecosystem. Instead, features, software experience, hardware quality, and innovation are what make users choose and stay with a brand.

In fact, the absence of Binding Cluster support may have the opposite effect. Users who specifically choose Matter for its openness and interoperability may decide not to purchase Aqara products because an important part of the Matter specification is missing.

Could you please clarify whether Matter Binding Cluster support is planned for future firmware updates for the H2 Switches and Dimmers? If not, could you explain the technical or strategic reasons why it is not being implemented?

@DEBikal You’re raising a super valid point—and I get why Matter Binding (0x001E) is a “make-or-break” feature for people who chose Matter specifically for local, controller-less interactions.

That said, in the reference info we have here, there’s no mention of Matter Binding Cluster support (or a roadmap/ETA for it) on H2 Switches/Dimmers, so I can’t confirm whether it’s planned or explain the official technical/strategic reason.

What we can confirm from the current materials is:

  • The H2 line is positioned around dual-protocol Thread & Zigbee support, where Thread mode targets third-party Matter ecosystems and Zigbee mode unlocks Aqara-specific advanced features. For example, the Dimmer Switch H2 US explicitly supports Thread/Zigbee switching and notes that Thread mode can join third-party Matter ecosystems without an Aqara hub, while Zigbee mode enables more Aqara features like power monitoring, etc. (depending on wiring/setup).
  • Some advanced behavior (like Decoupled Switch Mode) is Zigbee-only and Aqara Home-only, and won’t carry over when bridged out to third-party Matter platforms—where it behaves more like a standard relay switch. That’s a good example of how feature parity can differ depending on whether you’re using Thread/Matter vs Zigbee/Aqara.

If Binding Cluster support is important for your setup, the most actionable next step is to submit it as a formal feature request (with your use cases like “directly bind switch → light” and “controller offline resilience”) so it lands in the right internal channel:

If you share what ecosystem you’re using (Apple Home / Google Home / Home Assistant, etc.) and whether your H2 is running Thread mode or Zigbee bridged via a hub, folks can also chime in with practical alternatives they’ve used in the meantime (even if it’s not true Binding).
