Brilliant Integration of Govee Lights and Shelly Devices for Smart Automation

I wanted to share an exciting project I recently completed using Govee lights and Shelly devices. It’s been a fantastic journey, and I’m thrilled with the results!

The Vision:
I envisioned creating a seamless automation system that integrates lighting and power control. The goal was to have my Govee lights adjust based on real-time conditions, such as temperature and time of day, while also controlling power outlets via Shelly relays. This setup would not only enhance convenience but also add a layer of energy efficiency.

The Setup:

  1. Govee Lights Configuration: I started by setting up my Govee light strips in various rooms. Using their waterproof design, I placed them in areas where I wanted dynamic lighting effects. The ability to adjust colors and brightness through the Govee app was a game-changer.

  2. Shelly Relay Integration: To control power outlets, I installed Shelly 2PM relays. These devices allowed me to toggle power to outlets remotely and integrate them into my automation routines. For example, I set up a system where turning on a light switch also activates the corresponding outlet via the Shelly relay.

  3. Automation Rules: I created automation rules using Home Assistant. One of my favorites is a rule that adjusts the lighting based on the outdoor temperature. If the temperature drops below a certain threshold, the lights switch to a warmer color palette. This integration with temperature sensors adds a touch of comfort to my home.

Challenges and Solutions:

  • Initial Configuration: Setting up the Shelly relays was a bit tricky at first. I had to experiment with different wiring configurations to ensure everything worked seamlessly. After some research and trial and error, I found the optimal setup.
  • Temperature Integration: Initially, I faced issues with parsing input values for temperature conditions. After some troubleshooting, I realized that casting the input to an integer resolved the problem. This allowed me to create more dynamic automation rules.

The Outcome:
This project has exceeded my expectations. The combination of Govee lights and Shelly devices has transformed my home into a smart, connected space. The ability to control lighting and power outlets remotely, along with dynamic adjustments based on real-time data, has made my life more convenient and enjoyable.

Tips for Others:

  • Plan Carefully: Take the time to map out your desired automations and configurations before diving into the setup.
  • Experiment: Don’t be afraid to try different configurations and rules. You’ll learn a lot along the way.
  • Seek Community Support: If you encounter issues, don’t hesitate to reach out to forums and communities. There’s a wealth of knowledge and support available.

I’m incredibly satisfied with how this project turned out and excited to explore even more possibilities with my Govee and Shelly devices. If you’re thinking of starting a similar project, I highly recommend giving it a try!
