Bringing Multiple Smart Brands Together: My Integration Journey

Hey everyone! :star2: I’ve been on a bit of a journey lately trying to bring together various smart home devices from different brands. It’s been a fun challenge, and I wanted to share some of my experiences and tips in case anyone else is tackling something similar! The Goal: I wanted to create a seamless smart home experience using devices from Shelly, Govee, Wyze, and a few others. The idea was to have everything work together without too much hassle, even though they’re from different ecosystems. The Process: First, I started by mapping out what I wanted each device to do. For example, I have a Shelly 3EM energy monitor that I wanted to integrate with my Govee RGB lights. The goal was to have the lights change color based on energy usage thresholds. Sounds simple, but it took a bit of tweaking! The Challenges: One thing I quickly realized is that not all devices play nicely together out of the box. For instance, getting the Shelly app to remember my preferred 24-hour view was a bit of a pain. I ended up having to manually adjust it each time until I found a workaround. I also ran into some translation issues with the app, which was a bit frustrating since my dad isn’t very tech-savvy and relies on German translations. The Solutions: After some research and trial and error, I found that using Home Assistant as a central hub made things much smoother. It allowed me to create custom automations that bridged the gap between different brands. For example, I set up a routine where my Govee lights dim when my Wyze camera detects motion at night, providing just enough light without being too bright. A Fun Project: Speaking of motion detection, I’ve been experimenting with setting up motion-activated lights in my kitchen. The idea is to have the sink lights turn on when motion is detected and then turn off after 30 seconds of no movement. But here’s the twist: if the ceiling lights are already on, the sink lights stay on for another 30 seconds. It’s a small detail, but it makes a big difference in terms of convenience! Tips for Others: - Start Small: Don’t try to integrate everything at once. Start with one or two devices and gradually add more as you get comfortable. - Use a Central Hub: Tools like Home Assistant or even smart plugs can act as bridges between different ecosystems. - Automation is Key: Take the time to set up automations that suit your lifestyle. It might take a bit of setup, but the payoff is worth it. Looking Ahead: I’m really excited about the possibilities of integrating even more devices in the future. I’ve heard great things about using smart bulbs for mood lighting based on music, and I’d love to try something like that with my Govee lights. If anyone has experience with similar setups, I’d love to hear your tips! Smart home integration can be a bit of a puzzle, but with patience and a little creativity, it’s totally doable. Happy tinkering everyone! :rocket:
