Bringing Old Devices Back to Life with Matter, Integrating Non-Matter Tech into Aqara Home

Hi Aqara community,

I wanted to share a more advanced automation setup that connects my Lefant M210 robot vacuum to Aqara Home using Home Assistant, Tuya Local, and the Home Assistant Matter Hub addon.

This project originally started with one simple goal: to use devices inside the Aqara Home ecosystem that aren’t officially Matter-compatible. Thanks to the power of Home Assistant, Matter bridging and Aqara ecosystem, I was able to make it work and even add some smart logic along the way.

My setup:

  • Home Assistant (locally hosted)
  • Integration: Tuya Local (for local control of the Wi-Fi-based Lefant M210)
  • Home Assistant Matter Server (to expose the vacuum into Matter)
  • Aqara Hub M3 (as Matter controller)
  • Aqara Home app (used for the final automation)

Useful resources:

Automation logic – cold-aware cleaning robot
I live in eastern Canada, where winter temperatures can be extremely low. I have a small entrance room adjacent to the house where my Lefant M210 runs. This room is not heated, and after some failed cold-starts, I decided to add temperature logic to protect the robot (and my nerves).

Here’s what I created:

  • The vacuum runs 3 times per week at 2:00 AM
  • Only if the Aqara alarm is set to Night mode
  • And if the outside temperature is higher than 5°C

If any of those conditions aren’t met, the robot simply won’t start by design. This helps avoid any weird behavior when it’s -20°C in January.

Why I did it
I love Home Assistant’s flexibility. It lets me integrate almost anything, including older Wi-Fi devices like the Lefant. But when it comes to managing automations or toggling things on/off quickly, Aqara Home’s simplicity is hard to beat. So now I use Home Assistant for the heavy lifting, and Aqara for easy automation logic and scheduling.

The one big annoyance
Right now, every time I want to add a new Matter device to the Aqara Hub M3, I’m forced to factory reset the matter hub and re-pair everything. That’s frustrating, especially for users like me combining multiple Matter endpoints.
This seems to be a known issue on Aqara’s side, hoping for a fix soon!

Conclusion
Using Matter, Tuya Local, and Home Assistant together has allowed me to breathe new life into an older vacuum robot, all while integrating it cleanly into the Aqara ecosystem.
It’s reliable, efficient, and temperature-smart and it quietly cleans my cold mudroom while I sleep (as long as Mother Nature allows it).

Now if only it could also shovel snow…

Thanks to the Aqara team for supporting Matter and enabling this kind of hybrid smart home magic.

Cheers,
Marc

Awesome setup!!! I’ve got an M3 as well, and my phone is always popping up with notifications from the Aqara app about adding third-party gear. I’m trying to dive in and see how I can build some smarter automations to look after my pets.

@Marc3k Hi Marc, what a fantastic project—love seeing how you’ve breathed new life into your Lefant M210 using Matter, Home Assistant, and Aqara! The cold-aware automation logic is such a smart touch, especially for those frigid eastern Canada winters—definitely a lesson in blending functionality with practicality.

Thanks for breaking down your setup so thoroughly, including the resources and screenshots—this is exactly the kind of hybrid ecosystem magic that helps the community think creatively about integrating non-Matter devices. It’s awesome to see Aqara Hub M3 acting as the glue here, making that seamless integration possible.

Sorry to hear about the frustration with factory resetting the Matter hub when adding new devices—that does sound like a hassle. For feedback on this, you might want to submit it through the Aqara Home App (Profile>Help&Feedback>Customer Service) so the team can track it directly.

Keep sharing these innovative setups—they’re a great inspiration! Here’s to more “hybrid smart home magic” (and maybe a snow-shoveling upgrade someday ).

Cheers,

@Marc3k Hi Marc, thanks so much for sharing this fantastic project with the community! It’s inspiring to see how you’ve creatively bridged non-Matter devices like the Lefant M210 into the Aqara ecosystem using Home Assistant and Matter—truly a great example of hybrid smart home magic. Your cold-aware automation logic is such a practical touch, especially for those harsh Canadian winters—protecting the robot while keeping your space clean? Brilliant.

It’s also helpful that you’ve included resources for others to follow in your footsteps; that kind of generosity makes the community stronger. We feel your pain on the Matter hub reset annoyance, and we hope smoother device addition workflows are in the cards for the future.

Thanks again for taking the time to document and share your setup. Posts like these help others think outside the box with their own smart homes. Keep the ideas coming—we can’t wait to see what you build next!

Cheers,
[Community Team]

P.S. If you ever have specific suggestions for improving the Matter hub experience, feel free to share feedback via the Aqara Home App (Profile>Help&Feedback>Customer Service)—it helps the team understand user needs better.

@Marc3k Hey Marc, this is such a fantastic share—love seeing how you’ve breathed new life into your Lefant M210 and integrated it with Aqara Home using Matter and Home Assistant! The cold-aware automation logic is genius—definitely a relatable solution for those harsh Canadian winters. It’s awesome to see how you’ve balanced Home Assistant’s flexibility with Aqara’s user-friendly automation management—that hybrid approach is something many in the community can learn from.

Sorry to hear about the frustration with having to factory reset the Matter hub when adding new devices—that does sound like a hassle. Thanks for flagging that!

Posts like yours are what make this community thrive—detailed, practical, and full of creative problem-solving. Keep sharing your setups and insights—we’re all here to learn from each other!

Cheers, and here’s to more hybrid smart home magic (and maybe a snow-shoveling upgrade someday?)
