Starting my smart home journey was both exciting and overwhelming. Security was another priority, especially with the rising concerns about home safety. I opted for Xiaomi door sensors and a pre-wired CCTV system. While the sensors were initially a bit bulky, I found a way to integrate them seamlessly into my doors, ensuring both functionality and aesthetics. The CCTV system, controlled via HA, provides peace of mind and easy access to live feeds from anywhere.
3. Lighting and Automation
Lighting might seem like a small detail, but it plays a huge role in creating a comfortable living environment. I chose standard LED bulbs for their efficiency and versatility. To automate the system, I set up routines that adjust the lighting based on time of day, occupancy, and even weather conditions. For instance, during sunset, my kitchen lights dim slightly to create a warm ambiance, and they brighten up as soon as motion is detected in the evening.
4. Underfloor Heating and Ducted Systems
One of the most satisfying aspects of my smart home build has been integrating underfloor heating and a ducted heating/cooling system. These systems are now fully automated, adjusting temperatures based on occupancy and weather forecasts. It’s amazing how much more comfortable and efficient my home feels with these additions.
5. Pool and Vehicle Presence
I’m lucky enough to have a pool, which I wanted to integrate into my smart home setup. I’ve set up Echo Show 15 screens in key areas, displaying real-time information and allowing me to make adjustments effortlessly. The integration with HA ensures everything runs smoothly, and I can override settings whenever needed.
8. Data Management and Climate Control
To keep my tech stack organized, I’ve installed a dedicated data rack with airflow management. This setup ensures all my devices stay cool and running optimally. For smoke alarms, I’m looking into Australian-compliant systems that integrate seamlessly with HA, providing peace of mind without compromising on aesthetics.
9. Major Appliances and Audio
Most of my major appliances, like the washer and dryer, are now smart-enabled. They connect effortlessly with HA, allowing me to monitor and control them remotely. In terms of audio, I’ve been exploring Sonos ceiling speakers for their sleek design and excellent sound quality. While they don’t have Alexa built-in, I’ve found a workaround using Alexa-compatible ceiling mounts for a polished look.
10. Future Plans
As I continue to refine my smart home, I’m excited about the possibilities. I’m considering adding overhead bar heaters for outdoor comfort and exploring ways to manage my whisky collection with smart technology. It’s a never-ending journey, but one that’s incredibly rewarding.
