Choosing the Right Device for Homebridge Setup

Hi everyone, I’m looking to set up Homebridge and I’m a bit torn about which device to use. I have an always-on Mac Mini, a Synology NAS, and a Raspberry Pi. I’ve heard most people use a Raspberry Pi, but I’m curious about the advantages of each option. I want to make sure I choose the best fit for my setup and future-proof it as much as possible.

I’ve been using my Mac Mini for photo and video syncing, so it’s always on. Would setting up Homebridge on it be a good idea? I’m also considering whether a virtual machine would be better or if it’s easier to just install it directly. On the other hand, the Synology NAS is already handling backups and files, so maybe adding Homebridge there would streamline things. But I’m not sure how resource-intensive Homebridge is.

I’ve heard the Raspberry Pi is popular because of its low power consumption and ease of use, especially for more tech-savvy users. But I’m not sure if I want to invest time in setting it up from scratch. I’m also wondering about the reliability of Homebridge. I want to integrate a Level Lock, which only supports HomeKit, and I don’t want to risk my security system being finicky.

Has anyone successfully used their Mac Mini for Homebridge? How about the NAS? I’d love to hear about your experiences and any tips you have for making this setup as smooth and reliable as possible. Let me know your thoughts!
