This holiday season, I decided to take my Christmas lights to the next level with some smart home automation magic!
I’ve always loved the festive glow of my outdoor lights, but manually turning them on and off just wasn’t cutting it anymore. So, I set out to create a fully automated system that would handle everything for me. First, I started by upgrading my traditional outdoor lights to smart LED strips. I chose the Philips Hue Outdoor Strip Lights because of their compatibility with HomeKit and Matter.
These strips are weatherproof and offer vibrant colors, which was a huge plus for my outdoor setup. Next, I wanted to integrate motion detection to ensure the lights only came on when needed. I picked up a Wyze Cam V3 and paired it with a TP-Link Kasa Smart Plug. The idea was simple: when motion is detected, the lights would automatically turn on and stay illuminated for 15 minutes. This way, I wouldn’t have to worry about lights staying on all night, saving energy and reducing unnecessary usage. The real magic happened when I connected everything through Home Assistant. I set up a simple automation using the built-in appdaemon framework. Here’s how it works:
Motion detected by the Wyze Cam triggers the automation.
The TP-Link Kasa Plug turns on, activating the LED strips.
After 15 minutes of inactivity, the lights gently fade off. I also added a failsafe to ensure the lights wouldn’t stay on during the day. By integrating the built-in sunrise and sunset sensors in Home Assistant, the system automatically disables the motion-triggered lights during daylight hours. The result? A seamless, energy-efficient holiday lighting system that brightens my home exactly when it’s needed. My neighbors have even commented on how beautiful the setup looks, and I love that I no longer have to manually toggle the lights every evening. If you’re thinking of upgrading your holiday lights this year, I highly recommend exploring smart lighting solutions and automation. It’s a fantastic way to add convenience and a touch of festive flair to your home!
Happy Holidays everyone! Let’s keep the magic alive! ![]()
