Christmasify My Home with Smart Lighting Automation
As the holiday season approaches, I’ve been thinking about how to add some festive cheer to my smart home setup. I came across the idea of using my Wyze color lights to create an automatic color-changing effect for my Christmas decorations, and I thought it would be a fun project to tackle!
My Vision
I wanted my living room and hallway to have a magical feel, with the lights automatically shifting between red, green, blue, and white to match the holiday spirit. The idea is to set it up so that the lights change colors throughout the day, creating a dynamic and festive atmosphere without any manual intervention.
The Setup
I started by reviewing the Wyze app to see if there was a built-in feature for color cycling. Unfortunately, it doesn’t seem to have this functionality out of the box. But I remembered reading about custom routines and automations in the Hubitat community, so I decided to dive into that!
The Process
- Research: I spent some time looking through forums and tutorials to understand how others have achieved similar results. It turns out that creating a custom automation script was the way to go.
- Script Development: With the help of some online guides, I wrote a simple script that would trigger the Wyze bulbs to change colors at predetermined intervals. The script uses a combination of time-based triggers and color transitions to create a smooth effect.
- Testing: I tested the script incrementally, starting with one bulb and gradually adding more to ensure everything worked as expected. It was a bit trial and error, but seeing the lights change colors for the first time was really exciting!
The Result
Now, my home is fully decked out with festive lights that automatically cycle through colors, creating a warm and joyful ambiance. The best part is that I don’t have to worry about manually changing the colors—I just set it up once, and it runs on its own!
