The Goal: Control my Samsung TV (2023 model) directly from OpenHAB. I’ve used Google Home and SmartThings in the past, but I’d love a seamless, direct integration without relying on third-party apps.
What I’ve Tried So Far:
- SmartThings Integration: I’ve explored the SmartThings binding for OpenHAB, but it seems a bit finicky. The app is great, but I’m looking for a more direct connection.
- UPnP Protocol: I’ve heard that many Samsung TVs support UPnP. I’ve installed the UPnP binding in OpenHAB, but I’m not sure how to configure it properly.
- Node-RED Workaround: I’ve considered using Node-RED to send commands to the TV via its web API, but I’m not confident in setting this up without errors.
- MQTT Integration: I’ve read about MQTT being a versatile protocol for device communication. If the TV supports MQTT or there’s a bridge that can translate commands, this might be a viable option.
Challenges Faced:
- Discovery Issues: The TV doesn’t show up automatically in OpenHAB’s device discovery.
- Configuration Complexity: The UPnP and MQTT bindings require detailed setup, and I’m not entirely sure where to start.
- Compatibility Concerns: I’m worried about compatibility between OpenHAB and the TV’s firmware.

- Has anyone successfully integrated a Samsung TV directly into OpenHAB?
- Are there specific bindings or scripts that simplify this process?
- What’s the best approach for sending power and volume commands from OpenHAB to the TV?
